So what is Microsoft Co-founder, Paul Allen’s connection to Life, the Universe and Everything?

Well, to begin with, it’s not through “Life Itself” although he is linked to the author of a book by that name.*1 See…http://www.amazon.com/Life-Itself-Touchstone-Books-Paperback/dp/0671255630
And it’s not through the Universe, although Paul Allen built a spaceship (and launched an industry) in order to traverse it.   http://www.scaled.com/projects/tierone/041004_spaceshipone_x-prize_flight_2.html *2

And it’s not even through “Everything,” although Alanis Morissette was one of the artists who opened Paul Allen’s music museum, the Experience Music Project in June of 2000.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OEKYPe7yrYQ

So what’s the connection? Perhaps the best way to answer the second question is to start with the first. So:  Q: What is the answer to life, the universe and everything?  A:  (To quote Google Calculator:)

The answer to life, the universe and everything = 42

    More about calculator.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Answer_to_Life,_the_Universe,_and_Everything

42—-The answer to life, the universe and everything—comes from Douglas Adam’s series, “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.” In the story, a “simple answer” to the Ultimate Question is requested from the computer “Deep Thought,” which was specially designed for this very purpose.  After 7 ½ million years and much anticipation, the computer arrives at its disappointing conclusion— “42.”

See…  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GUV7zz-8Oc

“Forty two!” yelled Loonquawl. “Is that all you’ve got to show for seven and a half million years’ work?”

“I checked it very thoroughly,” said the computer, “and that quite definitely is the answer. I think the problem, to be quite honest with you, is that you’ve never actually known what the question is.” [2] ( from Wikipedia)  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/42_(number)    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0371724/

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy began as a BBC Radio 4 series which first aired in March of 1978. The story has since been transformed into a series of best selling novels, a TV series, a record album and computer game and several stage adaptations, including a movie which was released in 2005.

So what is Paul Allen’s connection to Life, the Universe and Everything?

Let’s start with Allen’s connection to the author of Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Douglas Adams.  Paul Allen is connected to writer Douglas Adams, who was sometimes affectionately referred to as “DNA,” because Adams and Allen were both portrayed in the movie “Triumph of the Nerds: The Rise of Accidental Empires.” See… http://www.nba.com/blazers/features/Six_Degrees_Paul_Allen-109576-41.html   and  http://www.pbs.org/nerds/part1.html  and http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0010930/bio

Douglas Adams also worked on Monte Python’s Flying Circus with Eric Idle, who has been a guest at Paul Allen’s parties. See… https://within6degrees.wordpress.com/category/john-cleese/

And through the Hitchhiker movie, Paul Allen is also connected to Kevin Bacon—-

(through John Malkovich, who starred in Hitchhiker as well as “Queen’s Logic” with Kevin Bacon)

 and—-

to Scarlett Johansson, of  The Perfect Score—–

 (through Hitchhiker’s Zooey Deschanel).

See this Gap commercial:   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=le6QrkyvHaU

Finally, “Deep Thought,” the computer that took 7 ½ million years to come up with the answer “42” from the movie, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy,” has an IBM counterpart by the same name that plays a mean game of chess.

See.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deep_Thought  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minor_characters_from_The_Hitchhiker%27s_Guide_to_the_Galaxy#Deep_Thought  http://www.chessgames.com/player/deep_thought.html

According to Wikipedia,   IBM’s “Deep Thought” was named after Douglas Adam’s fictional AI computer.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deep_Thought_%28chess_computer%29    (And IBM is linked to Paul Allen because IBM played a key role in the history of Microsoft’s rise to fame. See… http://www.thocp.net/companies/microsoft/microsoft_company.htm )

Paul Allen has invested in his own kind of “Deep Thought” computer—the  “Digital Aristotle” — “an application capable of answering novel questions and solving advanced problems in a wide range of scientific disciplines.”  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Halo   http://www.projecthalo.com/    http://www.projecthalo.com/halotempl.asp?cid=04&newsid=4

Whether Allen’s Digital Aristotle will come up with a better answer to “Life, the Universe and Everything” than “Deep Thought” did remains to be seen. J *2.5

But since “the answer” is 42, then maybe the real question is this:

How is Paul Allen connected to the number 42?

Well, let’s see…

Star Trek, Production #42  “The Trouble with Tribbles,” was written by David Gerrold, an award-winning science fiction writer who started his career in 1966 as a college student by submitting an unsolicited story outline for the television series, Star Trek. He was invited to submit several premises, and the one chosen by Star Trek was filmed as “The Trouble with Tribbles.” (from Wikipedia)     Gerrold is a featured sci fi writer at Paul Allen’s Science Fiction Museum in Seattle, Washington.  http://www.empsfm.org/education/index.asp?articleID=982

Jupiter 42  Paul Allen’s friend, Gina Gershon, starred in the little known animated series “Tripping the Rift” about 5 misfits who live on the starship Jupiter 42. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0315081/

Vertigo 42   And Vertigo42, in the building Tower 42 in London, England (pictured on an episode of the BBC Hitchhiker’s guide to the Galaxy) http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A21605915   is an exclusive London hotspot. Equally hot and exclusive is Paul Allen and Dave Stewart’s Hospital, which opened in Covent Garden in the same city just a few years ago.  The Hospital website   http://www.thehospitalclub.com/TheHospital/app   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hospital_(club)     Tower 42 (Vertigo 42)   www.tower42.co.uk   www.vertigo42.co.uk

42 years ago,     In 1965, Paul Allen’s parents enrolled him in the seventh grade at Lakeside school, where he met lifelong friend and future business partner, Bill Gates and began his life-changing fascination with computers.    http://everything2.com/index.pl?node_id=80668   http://www.answers.com/topic/paul-allen

42 Canines:    Allen’s family show dog, Keira, had 42 teeth.

(No, I didn’t count….. 🙂   See.. http://www.faqs.org/qa/qa-15477.html    http://www.cwalker.net/manchestersOld/Owners.htm

———————————————————

BTW, why 42?

All sorts of theories have been floating around about it, but according to Douglas Adams himself,

The answer to this is very simple.  It was a joke.  It had to be
a number, an ordinary, smallish number, and I chose that
one.  Binary representations, base thirteen, Tibetan monks are
all complete nonsense.  I sat at my desk, stared into the
garden and thought `42 will do'.  I typed it out.  End of
        story.”

————————————————————————-

So those are the answers……but, while we’re on the subject, what about Microsoft Co-founder, Paul Allen’s connection to Life IN the Universe (and everything…)?

Funny you should ask, because a week or so ago, Allen and SETI unveiled the Allen Telescope Array in Hat Creek, California.  The ATA is a giant array of telescopes designed to explore the heavens in search of natural and unnatural phenomena in the universe.

From The New York Times:*3

”When the Allen Telescope Array, as it is known, is complete, it will consist of 350 antennas, each 20 feet, or 6 meters, in diameter. Using the separate antennas as if they were one giant dish, radio astronomers will be able to map vast regions of the sky cheaply and efficiently. The array will help search for new phenomena like black holes eating each other and so-called dark galaxies without stars, as well as extend the search for extraterrestrial radio signals a thousandfold, to include a million nearby stars over the next two decades. On Thursday, 42 of the antennas, mass-produced from molds and employing inexpensive telecommunications technology, were to go into operation.    “It’s like cutting the ribbon on the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria,” said Seth Shostak, an astronomer at the Seti Institute in Mountain View, California, who pointed out that this was the first radio telescope ever designed specifically for the extraterrestrial quest. The telescope, named for Paul Allen, who provided $25 million in seed money, is a joint project of the Radio Astronomy Laboratory of the University of California, Berkeley, and the Seti Institute.

“If they do find something, they’re going to call me up first and say we have a signal,” Allen said in an interview, adding, “So far the phone hasn’t rung.” Describing himself as “a child of the ’50s, the golden age of space exploration and science fiction,” Allen, a founder of Microsoft, said he first got interested in supporting the search for extraterrestrial intelligence after a conversation 12 years ago with Carl Sagan, the Cornell University astronomer and exuberant proponent of cosmic wonder. When the idea later arose to build a telescope array on the cheap, using off-the-shelf satellite dish technology and advanced digital signal processing, Allen was intrigued. “If you know anything about me,” he said, “you know I’m a real enthusiast for new unconventional approaches to things.” *3

True—

Over and over again you can see that Paul Allen has a soft spot for the impossible dream, the quixotic quest, the science project that crosses the boundaries of current possibility.

Whether it’s saving a football team or an old theater where he used to see 2001 A Space Odyssey, or building a space ship to reach the stars, Allen rescues the underdog, tilts at windmills and sometimes ends up with the last laugh on projects that started out with a giggle factor. http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn6459.html

Inspired by his love of science fiction (Allen also founded a Science Fiction Museum in Seattle) and SETI enthusiasts such as Arthur C. Clarke, Allen became involved in supporting SETI when his friend Carl Sagan asked him to help keep the SETI program alive after the Government decided to stop funding it. In 2001 he joined with the University of California, Berkeley, and the SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) Institute to install a set of 42 dish antennas in Hat Creek, California.    On October 11, the first phase of the ATA was put into operation.

From Time Magazine:*4

“The so-called Allen Telescope Array (ATA), which was scheduled to go live on Oct. 11, does what conventional radio telescopes do.  That is to say, it listens to the faint whisper of radio signals from celestial objects like quasars, which make up the collective voice of the universe.  But the ATA can listen on a private line too—the one on which suspiciously regular pulses emanating from the vicinity of sunlike stars would be carried. That’s how our broadcasts would sound to beings out there, and that’s how their broadcasts—if they exist—would sound to us.”*4

Which leaves us with the question…. Is there really intelligent life out there in the Universe?

According to Paul Allen….  “It’s the longshot of longshots, but if we did hear a signal from another civilization, that would be world-changing.” *5

In any case, if there isn’t life somewhere out there in the incredibly vast, seemingly illimitable universe, then, to quote Ellie Arroway from the movie, “Contact,”   “…it’s an awful waste of space.” http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118884/taglines

  ———————————————————————————————————————————————–

————————————————————————————————————————————————

One final thing——

In case you missed it, when Paul Allen flipped the switch on the Allen Telescope Array on October 11, 2007, guess how many of the 350  20ft radio telescopes were activated?

 42, of course…… J

Stay tuned for more 6 degrees connections….

 http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2003941324_aliens11m.html

From a 2004 Space.com article about SETI: The ATA will be a general-purpose radio telescope that will provide fundamentally new measurements and insights into the density of the very early universe, the formation of stars, the magnetic fields in the interstellar medium, and a host of other applications of deep interest to astronomers. At the same time, this 21st Century radio telescope will also have the capability to search for possible signals from technologically advanced civilizations elsewhere in the galaxy.    Paul Allen: “I am very excited to be supporting one of the world’s most visionary efforts to seek basic answers to some of the fundamental questions about our universe and what other civilizations may exist elsewhere,” said Allen. “I am a big proponent of leveraging revolutionary technology and design and applying it to important problems in science. The developments taking place with this new instrument will not only enables us to realize a lot of bang for our research and development buck, but it will also change the landscape of how telescopes will be built in the future. An instrument of this magnitude, which will result in the expansion of our understanding of how the universe was formed, and how it has evolved, and our place therein, is the reason I am the primary supporter of its development, design and construction.”

Answers to The Six Degrees of Paul Allen Anniversary Contest

So the prizes didn’t jazz you, eh? C’mon, how many people do you know who have a Darth Vader Jump Drive? Oh well, I had to choose between giving out a Star Wars USB Drive or a new Xbox 360 Elite, and I knew that no one would want one of those, so….:-)

(But seriously, you might want to check out Dynamism’s site.  There are a few really cool items for sale including some sharp-looking futuristic sunglasses that double as a 50-inch plasma screen T.V. when connected to your video Ipod—well, something that feels like a 50-inch screen T.V., anyway—the “I-Theater” sunglasses are actually small enough to fold up and put in your pocket!   Or you could check out the  iTech Bluetooth Laser Virtual Keyboard –why lug around a real keyboard when you can flash a virtual lighted keyboard and type on just about  anything? (see… http://www.dynamism.com/i-theater/main.shtml and http://www.dynamism.com/virtual-keyboard/main.shtml   ). Pretty cutting edge stuff, you know?

But anyway—let’s get back to the contest ….. I know you’re just dying to know the answers, so here they are!

Question:

(1) MITS (Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems) of Albuquerque, N.M. announced “The World’s First Microcomputer Kit to Rival Commercial Models,” the Altair 8800 PC, on the cover of the January 1975 issue of Popular Electronics. Shortly afterwards, a couple of guys called MITS’ owner Ed Roberts and told him that they had a BASIC interpreter for his computer, the Altair.  One of them later went out to meet with Roberts, discovering on the plane that he and his partners had forgotten to write the loader for the program! He hastily finished writing the loader as he flew in to New Mexico and demonstrated the completed program, BASIC, at MITS headquarters to Ed Roberts and his staff. Fortunately the program worked, and Robert hired him as MITS Director of Software Development.  Who was he?

Answer: Microsoft Co-founder, Paul Allen. http://startupgallery.org/gallery/printPage.php?ii=20  http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/features/2000/sept00/09-0525bookff75.mspx  Also— See Stephen Manes and Paul Andrews’ biography, “Gates; How Microsoft’s Mogul Reinvented an Industry—and Made Himself the Richest Man in America” pp.68—76.

The story goes something like this…. Paul Allen and Bill Gates were friends who had worked with computers since high school. They had been following the development of microprocessors, and knew that they had tremendous potential.  One day Allen was walking across Harvard Square when he saw the headline of the January 1975 issue of Popular Electronics—“World’s First Microcomputer Kit to Rival Commercial Models”—with a photo of an Altair computer on the cover.  www.vintage-computer.com/1975.shtml

He knew that this was what he and Bill Gates, then a Harvard student,  were waiting for. The Altair was a computer with limited capabilities and no software—yet at the time it was a breakthrough machine—-other mainframe computers of the day were huge, expensive refrigerator-like contraptions—and here hobbyists had the exciting opportunity to own their own, affordable PC!  For 1975 it was like something out of a science fiction novel.

Allen and Gates had never seen an Altair, but had designed a simulator for another business they had started together called Trafodata.  They knew it was possible, then, to design a software program for the Altair on a large PDP-10 computer.  Harvard just happened to have one of those, and Paul Allen took on the task of designing a simulator for the program they would be writing for the Altair. Bill Gates then started designing the Basic programming language itself. A third friend from Harvard, Monte Davidoff, worked on the math routines for the program.

Tall and bearded, Allen was the oldest-looking person in the group, so he was chosen to meet with MITS Director,  Ed Roberts to demonstrate the program the guys had invented. When Allen arrived at the Albuquerque airport, he expected to meet a professional in a business suit. But MITS director Ed Roberts was instead an earthy-looking guy who arrived in a pickup truck. Roberts’ company, MITS, was located in a dusty strip mall that also housed an office supply shop and a massage parlor. It was not exactly the Ritz. But Allen was not the only one who was surprised. Roberts was equally disconcerted when the software professional who was listed on Trafodata letterhead as  “President” of the company could not even afford the cost of an overnight stay at a local hotel!  Nonetheless, the next day, when the Altair had passed all of its memory tests and was ready for Allen’s program, the software that Allen and Gates wrote for the computer actually worked!

Paul Allen returned home to greet his friend Bill Gates with a brand new Altair computer provided by MITS and a new title, “Vice President and Director of Software at MITS.”

(2) The Rose Garden Arena, located at One Center Court in Portland, Oregon, opened its doors on October 12, 1995. The stadium, which is often used for concerts and other events, is the home of Portland’s professional basketball team, the Portland Trail Blazers. The guy who originally footed most of the $262 bill for the stadium also currently owns the Portland Trail Blazers. What is his name?

Answer: Microsoft Co-founder, Paul Allen.  Allen purchased the Portland Trailblazers from Larry Weinberg in 1988 for $70 million dollars. The team was his first major purchase since Microsoft went public in 1986, and his first purchase of a professional sports team (though it wouldn’t be the last).  The team is still a favorite with Allen, who recently spent millions of dollars on new players this year in order to give the Blazers a winning edge in the upcoming season.

 (3)  Seven tug boat crew members were plucked from icy seas off Port Alfred a couple of days ago in a dramatic sea rescue involving the luxury super yacht, the 414ft. Octopus. The maritime drama started at around 2pm on 8/23/07 when the tug boat, called Douala Tide, mysteriously sank 31 nautical miles off Port Alfred in heavy seas. The Octopus was one of the first ships on the scene and managed to rescue seven crew members of the tug. Who owns the Octopus?  http://www.dispatch.co.za/2007/08/24/Easterncape/abdrama.html

Answer: Microsoft Co-founder, Paul Allen.  Allen owns the megayacht Octopus, which was at one time the largest privately owned yacht in the world. Allen was reportedly not on board at the time of the rescue but the crew members of his ship were the heroes of the day when they saved the lives of seven people during a violent storm near Port Alfred, South Africa. The 414 ft yacht crew responded to a distress call that was sent out to whomever was nearby, and Allen’s ship was large enough to withstand seas so heavy that rescue teams could not come close to the area  for several hours.

 (4) The Seattle Seahawks football team was purchased in 1988 by real estate developer Ken Behring.  Eight years later, when Behring decided that he wanted to move the team to Los Angeles— much to the chagrin of Seahawks fans—another guy stepped in and eventually bought the team, thereby keeping it in Seattle. (For fun, check out this article from The Seattle Post-Intelligencer written in 1996: “SOS: Seahawks Mess Not About You” by Laura Vecsey. (http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/archives/1996/9604030018.asp )  In 2002 the new owner helped build a new stadium in Seattle for the team called Qwest Field. In 2006, this same owner took the Seahawks to SuperBowl XL. Who was he?

Answer: Microsoft Co-founder, Paul Allen.  If you have a chance, read Laura Vecsey’s editorial (above), written at a time when saving the Seahawks and keeping them in Seattle was a Quixotic dream held by a few  diehard fans. In 1996, SOS—the Save Our Seahawks group  who showed up to meet the players on their expectedly brief return to Seattle—were thought of as the “poor betrayed fans, who go down fighting like Don Quixote against the windmill.”    Enter Seattle’s Clark Kent, Paul Allen.   Although Allen’s father played football, Allen bought the team before he became an avid football fan, more than anything else as a favor to his hometown. The postscript for this story is that Allen purchased the Seahawks and then helped to build a stadium, eventually taking the team to the Superbowl. Check out this video of Allen raising the 12th Man flag at the NFC championship game the year the Seahawks went to the Superbowl. As Paul Allen appeared before a packed stadium crowd at that game, the marquee flashed “He Saved Our Seahawks” and the fans cheered so loudly that it shook Qwest Field Arena.  What a moment! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wjhRaYj8sTc

(5)  The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is one of the largest charitable foundations in the world. The Foundation was established in the year 2000 and is dedicated to “bringing innovations in health and learning to the global community.”   Who founded the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation?

 Answer: Bill and Melinda Gates.

See.. http://www.time.com/time/printout/0,8816,1186811,00.html   http://www.gatesfoundation.org/default.htm

What the Gates’ are doing is truly heroic. See this excerpt from Time Magazine:

“Every year malaria kills 1 million people—most of them African children under age 5. When Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, 50, and his wife Melinda, 41, were looking for ways to give away their prodigious wealth, they assumed that such monumental problems were being worked on. Instead, Melinda says, they found a “vacuum that does need to be stepped into.” Step they did: the Gates Foundation now provides more than a third of the world’s entire malaria-research funding, and it’s paying off. The most effective drug to treat the disease, naturally occurring artemisinin, is in devastatingly short supply. But last month Gates-funded scientists announced that they had created the technology to manufacture artemisinic acid synthetically. Within five years, the cost of a lifesaving supply is expected to drop from $2.40 to 25 cents. Lead researcher Jay Keasling says it would not have been possible without a $43 million Gates grant. “I had companies call me and say, ‘This is great, but we can’t give you any money. We can’t make a profit on this,'” he says. But even if millions are saved from malaria, there will be more diseases and more death. The Gateses’ most profound influence has been to change expectations. Their belief that every life should have equal value, backed by their $29 billion endowment in the foundation, has injected hope not only into global health but also into their other priorities: public education, public libraries and at-risk families. The couple demands from grantees the same relentless focus on results expected of Microsoft employees and takes away the classic excuse for failure: not enough money. They have inspired others—from medical students, who are entering global-health fields in unprecedented numbers, to governments, which are putting billions into Gates initiatives. Says Jimmy Carter: “This is the most important foundation in the world.”

See… www.answers.com/topic/microsoft-staff-1978-jpg  One of the co-founders, a young looking guy with blonde hair is seated on the far lower left of the photo. His co-founder is seated on the far lower right sporting a beard and long hair.  Who is the co-founder seated on the right in this picture?

Answer: Microsoft Co-founder, Paul Allen.   Often this photo is depicted with the caption: “Would you have invested?” These 11 early Microsoft employees look more like they belonged in a commune than as a part of one of the most successful companies of all time.  But behind the long hair and beards were the people who laid the foundation for the founders’ vision of  a “computer on every desk and in every home all running Microsoft software.”

Who is the Chairman of Vulcan Productions?

Answer: Microsoft Co-founder, Paul Allen (are you beginning to see a pattern here :-)???

(10) In 1999, Seattle P-I’s movie critic William Arnold wrote this article about the revival of a nearly demolished theater in Seattle called the Cinerama. Fill in the name of the person he’s talking about at the end of the quote–( eg. Who saved the Cinerama?):

“It may sound like shameless hype, but there’s no other way to say this: the survival and restoration of Seattle’s Cinerama Theater in the late 1990s is simply one of the greatest success stories in the whole checkered history of movie theater preservation in America. When the theater’s 35-year lease ran out in March 1997, no exhibitor was even vaguely interested in the once-luxurious movie showcase at Fourth Avenue and Lenora Street. The Seattle media wrote its obituary, and no sane observer gave the naive, grass-roots “Save-the- Cinerama” campaign the slightest chance of success. But two years later, the Cinerama is not only still standing, it’s undergone a multimillion-dollar renovation, and will reopen April 23 as the most technologically advanced, state-of-the-art cinema, not just in Seattle and the Northwest, but arguably on the entire planet.  A year ago, in what was supposed to be the Cinerama’s final week, I took a last, sad tour of the long-neglected facility — cringing at the water-damaged walls, crumbling screen, broken seats and dilapidated fixtures that seemed almost beyond repair. Late last month, I wandered through the same space and found it had been not just lovingly restored to its full 1963 glory, but transformed into a kind of nirvana for movie lovers — a theater so chock-full of extras and innovations that it’s hard to list them all……….”   See… http://seattlepi.nwsource.com

Answer: Microsoft Co-founder, Paul Allen.

The story of the Cinerama goes like this: (Excerpt from… “Eight Ways to Save a Cinema” by Lisa Gray, Houston Chronicle)

”In the late ’90s, Paul Allen was renting a video when he saw a petition
to save Seattle’s Cinerama Theatre from being razed to make way for
downtown development. The Microsoft mogul remembered the theater from its 1960s
heyday, and he loved its giant screen. He signed the petition.

And then — you see where this is going — he bought that whole block
of Seattle, including the theater. Through his holding company, he spent
millions of dollars to restore the Cinerama to its groovy glory, complete
with retro mohair seats. At the same time, he updated the
single-screen, 808-seat theater for the digital age, making it one of the highest-tech
movie theaters in the world.
Allen hooked up with AMC Theatres, and the Cinerama now operates as a
first-run movie house, the kind of place where people line up to see
Snakes on a Plane. Seattle Weekly readers regularly vote it the city’s best
theater.

Does Allen think he’ll make his money back? Jason Hunke, Allen’s
spokesman, says the theater operates at a profit and the mogul may develop an
empty parking lot next door. But Allen’s investment was about saving the
theater, not about wringing the maximum return on his money.  The Cinerama, Hunke
says, “is his gift to the city.”

Seattle’s Clark Kent strikes again!!!

So those are the answers to the Six Degrees of Paul Allen Anniversary Quiz!  When it all comes down to it, this was not such a hard test after all, was it? 🙂

Now to start on this next year’s Six Degrees links to Microsoft Co-founder, Paul Allen, including Abraham Lincoln, Albert Einstein, architect Frank Gehry, the Antikythera Mechanism and The Earl of Sandwich…..Stay Tuned!   (In the meantime, “Darth” and I will be going…..:-)

Microsoft Co-founder, Paul Allen is one of those guys who gets more interesting the more you read about him.

The guy is involved in everything you can imagine, in every area you can imagine with everyone whom you can think of.

I was thinking about this sometime last year when I told a friend that I thought that everything in the world could be linked to Paul Allen within 6 degrees. You’ve heard of the Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon game, right? Well, ironically, a few days after I said that to my friend, I read that Paul Allen and Kevin Bacon were performing together on stage aboard one of Paul Allen’s yachts during the 2005 Cannes Film Festival!

Six degrees of Separation is basically the idea that anyone can be connected to anyone else through a chain of acquaintances with no more than 5 intermediaries.   One day I was playing around with my laptop and thought it would be fun to invent a new game based on that theory called “Six Degrees of Paul Allen.” The point of the game is to try to link Microsoft Co-founder, Paul Allen with anyone or even anything—within 6 degrees. And that’s how this blog was born.

On September 4th, this blog will have been around for a year.  And I have to tell you, it’s been a blast! I’ve spent last year trying to find new links between Paul Allen and remote celebrities and even historical figures from a 100+ years ago and that task has been easier than I thought it would be—which leads me to believe that the Six Degrees — “Small World” theory might actually be true, especially when it comes to people like Allen, who really get out there.

Before I do anything else, I want to thank you guys for reading my blog—you have no idea how much you make my day by stopping by!  Serious kudos also go out to Matt Mullenweg (http://photomatt.net/about/)  and the Awesome WordPress Blog Masters, primary enablers of my Blog Stat addiction (almost 14,000 site views and counting!!!:-) — you guys rock!!!  And Google —- it’s such a thrill to see my blog translated into Portugese, etc.— it is so cool! Really, thank you, you guys, for giving me a chance :-)!

Since this is an Anniversary issue, I thought it might be fun to do something out of the ordinary—so here is the “official” Six Degrees of Paul Allen Anniversary Contest.  Unlike the used salad shooter and the video tape rewinder in the shape of a sports car, there is actually a real prize for this contest—a 1 Gigabyte USB Drive (see below). So I’m thinking that someone might actually want to enter the contest, and if not, I’ll send the prize to myself and be the first person on my block with an R2D2 Jump Drive!  Anyway, see if you can be the first to answer the questions below in the comment section, and if you’re the first to answer all 10 questions correctly by 9/4/07 at midnight, I’ll send you the prize. No, really, I will…..:-)***

So here goes…..

1) MITS (Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems) of Albuquerque, N.M. announced “The World’s First Microcomputer Kit to Rival Commercial Models,” the Altair 8800 PC on the cover of the January 1st 1975 issue of Popular Electronics. Who was he?

2) The Rose Garden Arena, located at One Center Court in Portland, Oregon, opened its doors on October 12, 1995. The stadium, which is often used for concerts and other events, is the home of Portland’s professional basketball team, the Portland Trail Blazers. The guy who originally footed most of the $262 bill for the stadium also currently owns the Portland Trail Blazers. What is his name?

 3) Seven tug boat crew members were plucked from icy seas off Port Alfred a couple of days ago in a dramatic sea rescue involving the luxury super yacht, the 414ft.

 4) The Seattle Seahawks football team was purchased in 1988 by real estate developer Ken Behring. ( http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/archives/1996/9604030018.asp ) In 2002 the new owner helped build a new stadium in Seattle for the team called Qwest Field. In 2006, this same owner took the Seahawks to SuperBowl XL. Who was he?

 5) The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is one of the largest charitable foundations in the world. The Foundation was established in the year 2000 and is dedicated to “bringing innovations in health and learning to the global community.”   Who founded the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation?

I’m not sure I really have to do this, but just in case someone thinks
his or her answers should have shown up first and he/she should have
won, I don’t want to spend my life savings buying Star Wars themed
USB drives for everybody, you know? 🙂
So…..
By entering the contest you agree that your answers are not “consideration” and that I don’t owe you anything; contest is void where prohibited, subject to availability, and good only where Dynamism ships and as long as the shipping fee costs less than the item itself. (Note–Dynamism is not affiliated with the contest nor this blog–the company just has a lot of fun stuff, including cool-looking jumpdrives…:-)
Don’t enter if…..you’re even remotely connected to spam, if you’re coming from a site that’s not ‘G’ rated, if the WordPress Akismet thinks you’re spam, or you send emails to a lot of people who don’t know you on a regular basis. And if you think you should have been first, but your answers don’t show up first below, I’ll give you sympathy but not another USB Drive—basically this is just for fun, guys !!!!

Good Luck!!!

So what is artist Andy Warhol’s connection to Microsoft Co-founder, Paul
Allen?

Well, there are a few…..

When I started this game, the fun was in discovering that I could actually find a connection between Paul Allen and pretty much anyone in the world. But what has surprised me the most is just how many connections you can find between people if you really try, especially when it comes to Paul Allen, who seems to be connected to everybody on the planet or off as the case may be:-). In the past we’ve found links between Paul Allen and a number of people, including John Steinbeck, Mark Twain, President Franklin Pierce, Nelson Mandela and Carl Sagan.   In the future, we’ll connect Allen to Albert Einstein, architect Frank Gehry, writer Robert Fulghum (All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten) and President Abraham Lincoln.  So now the real challenge is not in finding the connections, but in listing them all before you start getting bored….  …which may have already happened :-), so without further ado….  Here are Andy Warhol’s connections to Paul Allen:

To begin with, the Allen Family Foundation seems to be donating to the same charities as Andy Warhol’s Foundation—see…..
http://blog.oregonlive.com/visualarts/2007/02/  (Scroll down to PICA Lands More than Pints; Feb.22, 07)

 DAVE STEWART

But the real person to person connections begin with one of Paul Allen’s best friends, musician Dave Stewart (Eurythmics).  Stewart owns a Warhol self-portrait (see “Good Medicine” by Miranda Sawyer), but his connections only begin there.*   Dave Stewart, a good friend of Paul Allen’s is a Warhol fan, who has collaborated on music-related projects with a number of Andy Warhol friends, especially those in the music business, including Bob Dylan, Mick Jagger and Lou Reed.*   In fact, Stewart is such a fan that a few years ago he wanted to recreate Warhol’s creative arts studio, “The Factory,” at an old abandoned maternity hospital in Covent Garden*1.   From “Who Will be Admitted to the Hospital?” The Evening Standard: “DAVE Stewart has a plan to turn himself into the Andy Warhol of London with a grand new scheme. It’s called The Hospital and it opens next week, a 100 million club dedicated to creating new film, music, and TV – not to mention drug-crazed, sex-fuelled revelry. Well, that might be stretching it. But ex-Eurythmic Stewart says: “When I first stood outside the building I thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be great to have a modern-day version of The Factory?”*1

St. Paul’s  18th century maternity hospital in Covent Garden, formerly the birthplace of new Londoners, became the birthplace of new ideas in 2003 due to the vision of Dave Stewart and another ” St. Paul”—-Microsoft’s Paul Allen. Allen purchased the vacant hospital building back in 1996, and one day his friend, Dave Stewart looked at the old run down structure that had become a vagrant hideaway and envisioned a new future for the place: a creative artists’ mecca patterned after Andy Warhol’s  prolifically creative New York City studio, The Factory.* Stewart and Allen named their new creative arts center,  “The Hospital.”  See…http://www.thehospital.dreamhost.com//  In addition to spawning creativity, the Hospital also has a private members club that has become a celebrity hotspot. Celebrity sightings have included Brad Pitt, Dennis Hopper, Mick Jagger, Bono, Demi Moore, Deepak Chopra… And Scarlett Johansson Of The Perfect Score.  The Hospital opened in 2003 with a grand party to celebrate the event. A number of celebrities attended the festivities, including Mick and Bianca Jagger’s daughter, model Jade Jagger, Sienna Miller who portrayed Warhol’s muse Edie Sedgwick in the recently released “Factory Girl” and her one-time beau Jude Law. Paul Allen, his sister Jo Allen Patton and friend Dave Stewart were also there at the party and seemed to be having a good time:   Here is the link to the Hospital party photos ….(press forward arrow on the right upper corner) http://editorial.gettyimages.com/Search/Detail.aspx?axd=DetailPaging.Search|1&axs=0|3156447%2c3156442%2c3156437%2c3156436%2c3156432%2c3156429%2c3156423%2c3156421%2c3156413%2c3156409%2c3156403%2c3156401%2c3156397%2c3156391%2c3156390%2c3156389%2c3156386%2c3156382%2c3156381%2c3156380%2c3156379%2c3156374%2c3156369%2c3156365%2c3156361%2c3156359%2c3156356%2c3156348%2c3156346%2c3156345%2c3156341%2c3156338%2c3156332%2c3156330%2c3156326%2c3156321%2c3156319%2c3156312%2c3156308%2c3156305%2c3156303%2c3156301%2c3156300%2c3156296%2c3156292%2c3156290%2c3156280%2c3156275%2c3156271%2c3156268%2c3156262%2c3196789%2c3196785%2c3196746%2c3196741%2c3196737%2c3196717%2c3196708%2c3196705%2c3196702&id=3156429

MICK JAGGER

Paul Allen can also be connected to Andy Warhol through the Jagger family. The Jagger family was very close to Andy Warhol.  Bianca Jagger was a good friend of Warhol’s, even after her divorce from Mick. *2 And even Jagger’s longtime girlfriend Jerry Hall seems to have enjoyed Warhol’s company.*3  Mick and Bianca’s daughter Jade Jagger knew Andy Warhol when she was a child, and was even rumored to have been babysat by him once or twice.*4  And  then, of course, there is Mick Jagger, Warhol’s friend and subject of some of his most famous works: *5  So Andy Warhol is connected to the Jagger family within 1 degree.  But the Jagger family is also connected to Paul Allen within 1 degree as well.  To begin with, Mick Jagger was rumored to have been a guest at Paul Allen’s Beverly Hills home not too long ago for an Allen fundraiser focused on bringing the Olympics to LA in 2016.*6
And that’s not Allen’s first contact with Jagger. Among other musicians like Carlos Santana, Peter Gabriel and Dave Stewart, Allen has performed with Rolling Stones’ Mick Jagger,
including collaborating in the making of a video several years ago for the opening of a Covent Garden Creative Arts Hotspot,  again, the Hospital. The video reportedly included Jagger, Dave Stewart and Paul Allen jamming out a performance together. *7   Allen has other ties to the Jagger family too. In the late 90’s when Mick Jagger and his longtime girlfriend Jerry Hall split, Allen, a friend of Jerry’s, offered her a shoulder to cry on. In fact, there were some pretty widespread rumors going around at that time of a romance between Hall and Allen.*8    So the Jagger family connects  Paul Allen to Andy Warhol within 2 degrees.  But again, why stop there? So here are a few other connections through mutual friends and acquaintances…

ANNIE LEIBOVITZ

One link from Paul Allen to artist Andy Warhol can be found through Rolling Stone photographer Annie Leibovitz. Look at this photograph Leibovitz took of the Pop artist, apparently at the same time Warhol was photographing her—  See…………….  http://www.temple.edu/photo/photographers/leibovitz/07.html  http://www.temple.edu/photo/photographers/leibovitz/photos.html  Other Leibovitz photos include John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi (The Blues Brothers),  not to mention Scarlett Johansson, of the Perfect Score. http://www.cateblanchett.net/images/news/vanityfair02.jpg  Leibovitz also has ties to Paul Allen through the Hospital:*9    “Annie Leibovitz: American Music” debuted at the Hospital in 2004, the second show to be held at that venue.   There are also connections through Leibovitz via Rolling Stone magazine founder,  Jann Wenner. Wenner gave Leibovitz her start as a photographer for Rolling Stone, including her first assignment—photographing John Lennon. Two years later Wenner made Leibovitz Rolling Stone’s chief photographer.http://www.pbs.org/wnet/americanmasters/database/leibovitz_a.html  Jann Wenner also knows Paul Allen and was even invited to a weekend trip aboard Allen’s yacht awhile back.  http://72.14.253.104/search?q=cache:9NbY8nev278J:www.mbajungle.com/magazine.cfm%3FINC%3Dinc_article.cfm%26artid%3D2112%26template%3D1+jann+wenner+and+paul+allen&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=5&gl=us

 THE VELVET UNDERGROUND

The Velvet Underground— Andy Warhol ventured into music as well, managing John Cale, Lou Reed and the rest of The Velvet Underground rock band in the 70’s…*10   A member of the Velvet Underground band, Lou Reed was also a guest at Allen’s Alaskan party aboard the Crystal Harmony, a luxury cruise ship in 1998 .  There were rumors of late night jam sessions aboard ship with Allen, Lou Reed and Little Feat. According to another Rolling Stone author, Jeff Goodell, one night Allen got up on stage with Lou for a rendition of  “Walk on the Wild Side.”*11

BOB DYLAN

There are quite a few connections between Warhol and Allen through musician, Bob Dylan.*12  Dylan and Warhol were friends who hung around with the same crowd.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pQWLeFiPQ_U  http://www.pbs.org/wnet/americanmasters/dylan/timeline_1965.html  See..Warhol and Dylan (Elvis portrait in the background)  http://grouper.com/video/MediaDetails.aspx?id=1540371&ml=o%3D7%26fr%3D1417527%26fx%3D Andy Warhol even did a screen test of Bob Dylan.   Bob Dylan was also a good friend of Warhol’s muse, socialite Edie Sedgwick.   See the movie, “Factory Girl.” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DHPcZfnWL-o   Bob Dylan and Mick Jagger were friends of Andy Warhol and hung around the same jetset crowd. Here they are many years later performing together at a concert.See…http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pTqEW2em0u4&mode=related&search =   Paul Allen has a direct connection to Bob Dylan through his movie production company, Vulcan Productions.  “No Direction Home”, a terrific movie about Bob Dylan, was produced by Paul Allen’s Vulcan Productions, and was also directed by Paul Allen’s friend, Martin Scorsese. http://www.clearblueskyfilms.com/TemplateDocumentaries.aspx?contentId=94   http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0367555/     But Paul Allen is also connected to Warhol through Bob Dylan via a few of his friends:  Paul Allen’s friend, Gina Gershon once knocked Bob Dylan out in a boxing match:*13  See…  http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m1285/is_9_33/ai_108050855/print  And she and Bob Dylan still keep in touch…. http://www.wireimage.com/SearchResults.aspx?igi=19193&s=gina%20gershon&cbi=6504&sfld=C&vwmd=e  Allen’s friend, Dave Stewart produced records by Bob Dylan, Aretha Franklin and Mick Jagger—*14    And Allen’s good friend, Robbie Robertson performed with Bob Dylan in the legendary rock group, The Band, during their 1974 concert tour.*15     In fact, on Thanksgiving Day in 1976, The Band performed a farewell concert after 16 years of touring, with celebrated guests that included Eric Clapton, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison and Ringo Starr. The concert was filmed by Paul Allen’s friend, director Martin Scorsese, who included a number of interviews. Released in 2002, “The Last Waltz” was hailed as one of the greatest concert films ever made. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Last_Waltz

And now let’s connect Paul Allen to Andy Warhol through a few of Warhol’s most famous paintings:

ARETHA FRANKLIN

 THE CAMPBELL’S SOUP CAN

Here is one of Warhol’s most famous paintings—the Campbell’s Soup Can. http://www.jssgallery.org/Other_Artists/Andy_Warhol/Campbells_Soup_Can.htm  How do you connect a Campbell’s Soup Can to Microsoft Co-founder, Paul Allen? Well, I’d bet a million dollars  that Allen has had at least one bowl of Campbell’s soup in his lifetime— and maybe he’s even used one of Campbell’s cream soups in his family’s Fresh King Salmon Cakes and Creamed Peas, recipe. http://www.seahawks.com/ArDisplay.aspx?ID=6148  But there is a better link between Campbell’s Soup and Allen, who also happens to be the owner of  the Seattle Seahawks football team.   In 1997, Allen bought the Seahawks from previous owner Ken Behring after Behring absconded with the football team, taking it from Seattle to L.A. Allen’s purchase kept the team in Seattle, and the fans have been grateful ever since—especially a couple of years ago when Allen took the team to the SuperBowl. Seahawks Quarterback, Matt Hasselbeck was chosen as a Campbell’s Chunky Soup spokesperson, and he and his mother have appeared in commercials for the company. *16

 ELVIS PRESLEY

Warhol’s Elvis Presley http://en.easyart.com/scripts/zoom/zoom.pl?pid=133884 http://www.nga.gov.au/OutandAbout/Large/45234.htm   Presley can be linked to Paul Allen because:  Elvis starred in “Viva Las Vegas” with Ann Margret, who starred in “Grumpier Old Men” with Daryl Hannah, who was a guest at Paul Allen’s first Hollywood party in 1996 at his villa in the south of France.  And here are a few great Elvis songs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HGq1MRPDO6I&NR=1 Hound Dog  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_1Qo1eaWF8c Heartbreak Hotel from the 50’s

 MICKEY MOUSE

Andy Warhol’s Mickey Mouse http://en.easyart.com/scripts/zoom/zoom.pl?pid=8380   http://www.allanimation.com/anwarartofmi.html   Walt Disney’s Mickey Mouse was another popular Warhol. Allen can be connected to Warhol through Mickey Mouse via the Disney Corporation. Mickey Mouse was invented by Walt Disney, the founder of Disney Corp, and one of the very first entertainment websites on the web, called Starwave, was sold to the Disney Company in 1998. Starwave was founded by Microsoft Co-founder, Paul Allen.*17   (And here are a few videos of  the Mickey Mouse cartoon from 1929!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o5zdHAspBAQ Mickey Mouse solo 1929 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hq3KKbYJqc0 Mickey Mouse Haunted House 1929

MARILYN MONROE

One of Warhol’s Marilyn Monroe Paintings:http://webexhibits.org/colorart/marilyns.html   Movie icon Marilyn Monroe starred in “Some Like it Hot” with actor Tony Curtis, father of Jamie Lee Curtis. Jamie Lee Curtis starred  in “True Lies” with Arnold Schwarzenegger, who recently attended the Damien Hirst exhibit at the Gagosian Gallery in Beverly Hills on February 22, 2006, ironically 20 years to the day after Andy Warhol’s death. Also in attendance at that same exhibit that very day was Microsoft Co-founder, Paul Allen.  See…http://www.filmmagic.com/SearchResult.aspx?str=damien+hirst&sfld=C http://www.filmmagic.com/SearchResult.aspx?str=paul+allen&sfld=C     And here are a couple of great Youtube videos of Marilyn Monroe: Happy Birthday, Mr. President http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k4SLSlSmW74  Montage of photos http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4by0kicznU&mode=related&search

JACKIE KENNEDY

Andy Warhol’s Jackie Kennedy:http://www.art.com/asp/sp-asp/_/pd–10071320/sp–A/Jackie_1964.htm  Paul Allen can be connected to Jackie Kennedy because Paul Allen’s friend, President Bill Clinton met Jackie’s husband, John F. Kennedy personally and shook hands with him at the White House in 1963 when he was invited there as a representative of Boy’s Nation. Will Smith was the voice of Oscar the Shark Slayer in DreamWorks’ movie, “Shark Tales.” Paul Allen has an interest in DreamWorks and used to be the movie studio’s largest shareholder.     http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rT90keJ51bY Thriller

  THE BEATLES

Warhol’s John Lennon of The Beatles pinguimazul.wordpress.com/tag/animacao/      One connection between Beatles’ Paul McCartney  and Microsoft Co-founder, Paul Allen is that McCartney was one of Allen’s guests at his lavish St. Petersburg party in 2001.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l8UOHpMGG0Y  Here is a video of the Beatles in the 60’s singing “Help.”

 —————————————————————————– —————————————————————————–

So those are the links between Microsoft Co-founder, Paul Allen and artist Andy Warhol.  But there is one more connection to make, and it has something to do with our next 6 degree link, architect Frank Gehry.    Paul Allen is connected within one degree to architect Frank Gehry through this one venue. But he’s also connected to Andy Warhol within one degree through the same place. In fact, this locale connects most of the people whom we’ve talked about here within one degree to Paul Allen—
Annie Leibovitz, Robbie Robertson, Mick Jagger, Bob Dylan, Michael Jackson, Dan Aykroyd, Dave Stewart, Lou Reed, The Velvet Underground, Elvis Presley and even Mickey Mouse.
If you’re from Seattle, this is a no-brainer. But just for fun I’ll give you one more clue.:-) Think of a place that embodies this famous quote from Johann Wolfgang
von Goethe better than nearly anywhere else you can imagine:

“Architecture is Frozen Music”

Stay tuned for the answer…..

The Party of the Century…. Answers to Truman Capote

It’s that time of year again…the time when we celebrate our connection to the Eternal by connecting with each other.

We send cards to people we never see all year just to touch base once again.  We travel to faraway places just to visit family and friends and remind ourselves that despite that daily grind we belong somewhere—we are an integral part of a larger community. And ultimately, we gather together to celebrate.

You may have gone to a party this year that seemed like a contender for “The Party of the Century.”  Microsoft Co-founder, Paul Allen went to one of those on New Year’s Eve, in fact.

Put yourself in his shoes for a moment and picture welcoming in the New Year on an island paradise so lovely and exotic that it inspired Ian Fleming to conjure up his James Bond stories….

…. at a luxurious party hosted by the guy who happened to launch the musical careers of U2, Bob Marley, Steve Winwood and Melissa Etheridge….

And, as you’re dancing barefoot in the sand,* having a great time, your own rock band—the one that you jam with just for fun when you vacation aboard your 414 ft. megayacht—-is performing on stage, entertaining the select group of celebrity guests, lead by one of your best friends, Robbie Robertson.

THAT was how Microsoft Co-founder, Paul Allen spent New Year’s Eve. Not a bad life if you can get it, you know?:-)

See…

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_Blackwell

But as great as Chris Blackwell’s New Year’s party was, it wasn’t the official “Party of the Century.” And neither were the many parties that Paul Allen has hosted throughout the years that seem like they could be contenders for the prize. (See “Party of the Century–Part Two”—next post)  Instead, that title went to a Ball that was held over 40 years ago, “The Black and White Ball” held at Manhattan’s Plaza Hotel on November 28th, 1966.

The actual  “Party of the Century” was hosted by a man known far better for his literary talents—the brilliant, controversial novelist, Truman Capote. Truman’s remarkable party spawned a book called “Party of the Century,” See… http://www.amazon.com/Party-Century-Fabulous-Black-White/dp/0471659665 a classic Vanity Fair 30 Year Anniversary article, called “A Night to Remember”See… http://www.vanityfair.com/magazine/archive/1996/07/capote199607 and a legendary reputation.*1   http://news.independent.co.uk/world/americas/article360057.ece

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

If you’ve heard of Truman Capote, it may be because two movies have come
out about him in the past year or so;
the Oscar-winning, “Capote,” and the movie “Infamous,”  a film that opened in December and appears to be headed for as promising a future, having already been nominated for one award.**

You may also recognize Truman Capote as the author of one
of the best selling novels of all time, “In Cold Blood,” or remember him for his equally
famous, “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.”

But in the 60’s everyone knew Truman Capote as a socialite, and as a socialite, he knew just about everybody. Which is why he is such a key figure when it comes to our within six degrees connections. Capote was really connected, and since we’re linking Truman Capote to Microsoft Co-founder, Paul Allen, that means that Allen has connections to most of the same people.

Through Capote, Allen is linked to some pretty interesting people, including ****Winston Churchill, William Randolph Hearst, Frank Sinatra, Charlie Chaplin, Audrey Hepburn, Humphrey Bogart, Jackie Kennedy, Norman Mailer, Ernest Hemingway, William F. Buckley, Andy Warhol, Gore Vidal, John Steinbeck, numerous Ambassadors and European Royals, and Presidents Theodore Roosevelt, Harry Truman and Lyndon B. Johnson, among others.

Some of his connections, Capote’s closest friends, were women who were so graceful and beautiful that they were nicknamed, “Swans.”  Truman’s “Swans” included socialites Babe Paley, Slim Keith and Marella Agnelli —lovely ladies with rich husbands who doted on the
author and told him all of their secrets.

Capote was the master of secrets when it came to the lives
of the high society people whom he surrounded himself with. He even
invented a kind of “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon” game
called IDC, or “International Daisy Chain. But Capote’s “game” had a darker twist:

From “The Party of the Century” p. 39 “In one very funny letter to the Cerfs, Truman outlined a new party game he had invented to pass the time.  He called it IDC, or “International Daisy Chain.” Like Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon but a little racier, the object of the game was to make a chain of names, each one connected by the fact that he or she has had an affair with the person previously mentioned.  Truman was such an expert on sex and gossip that he was able to establish connections between the most unlikely people.”

In an unfinished book he called his life’s work, “Answered Prayers,” he began to collect, and then
expose a not so thinly disguised story of all of the secrets that he had
gathered throughout the years, including the secret lives of his closest friends. Just as “In Cold Blood” was a true crime
story novel, “Answered Prayers” was a real-life soap opera.

 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Answered_Prayers:_The_Unfinished_Novel  http://www2.ljworld.com/news/2005/apr/03/author_left_mark/  http://www.psychobiography.com/articles/capote.html

A preview of that work appeared as a set of articles that were published in Esquire Magazine in the mid- ‘70s. And as you can imagine, his friends were not happy. “Society’s Sacred Monsters are in a State of Shock. Never have you heard such cries of betrayal, such screams of outrage…” wrote Liz Smith in an article entitled “Truman Capote in Hot Water” in New York Magazine. ( p. 344 of  George Plimpton’s “Truman Capote,”)

Whether Truman expected this reaction–or maybe even why he
did something that was so widely considered a betrayal by his friends—might well be the subject of a good third movie about Truman Capote, but in any case,
his connections to that cherished group—connections he had spent a lifetime building—were shattered after the articles were published in Esquire, and Capote was cut off by all but a handful of friends.

The new movie about Capote, “Infamous,” which received a standing ovation when it premiered at the Venice Film Festival, appears to touch on the socialite aspect
of Capote more than the award-winning “Capote,” that came out over a year ago. But both of the movies seem to focus more on the drama involved in the making of his novel “In Cold Blood” than on his social connections and the mystery behind his final unfinished novel.

Here are a few Google videos about Truman. Look at the first–an
interview with Capote–and you catch a real glimpse of who this author was.
  http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-7111397200984613874&q=%22truman+capote%22+and+%22interview%22&hl=en http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H346vju8438

But we were talking about parties, weren’t we? And ultimately we need to
make a connection between Truman Capote and Microsoft Co-founder, Paul
Allen.
So here is the most basic connection between Truman Capote and Paul Allen: The 2-degree link occurred ironically at a party–not a party in the 60’s, but one that was thrown just last year at
a celebration party for the movie, “Capote.”
http://www.nydailynews.com/front/story/383461p-325522c.html
Paul Allen was one of the guests who attended Vanity Fair’s star-studded Golden Globes party for the movie “Capote.”Among the guests were Phillip Seymour Hoffman, who had just received long distance congratulations for his performance by 79-year-old Harper Lee, a childhood friend of Truman Capote’s and author of “To Kill a Mockingbird.”*2  Other friends of Truman Capote attended the Golden Globes party that night, including actress Shirley MacLaine, who had also been on the invitation list for Capote’s famous 1966 Black and White Ball.  Though she declined Truman’s invitation in 1966, she was present at the “Capote” movie soiree 40 years later. According to columnist Lloyd Grove from The New York Daily News,  MacLaine was “…. looking to buttonhole billionaire Paul Allen to discuss a philanthropic pet project in her hometown of Santa Fe, N.M.”

So there is one connection—Paul Allen—Shirley MacLaine (2)—Truman Capote (3).

Another party-related two-degree connection is through actress Candice Bergen, who was a guest at Truman Capote’s Ball in 1966 AND a guest at Paul Allen’s party aboard the Crystal Harmony luxury liner many years later. *2

So we have 2 within six degrees connections between Paul Allen and Truman Capote.

But why stop there?  🙂  There are so many connections we can make with this link that I am beginning to think that there really is something to this “small world” theory:-).  So let’s go…

Let’s start with the party itself.  The official guest list included…  Claudette Colbert, Candice Bergen, Arthur Miller, Gregory Peck, John Steinbeck, James Michener, Henry Fonda, Darryl F. Zanuck, Lauren Bacall and Lee Radziwell (Jackie Kennedy’s sister),  among others.  Since Paul Allen has a 2-degree connection with Truman Capote, then the guests at the Black and White Ball would have a 3-degree connection to Allen through Capote. For a few more names from the guest list, see… http://www.lapetitezine.org/DavidTrinidad.htm

Now let’s link Paul Allen to a number of other people through Truman Capote’s “swans.”

Truman’s lovely socialites had a few interesting connections of their own. And since Capote has a 2 degree connection to Paul Allen, his swans would be (3) and their links (4)

So here goes…

Slim Keith (3)

Was the original “California girl.” When she was in her teens she met actor William Powell (4), who introduced her to a number of celebrities including William Randolph Hearst (4).  Keith ended up being invited to Hearst’s castle many times and she knew quite a few of the stars that frequented there.http://www.viamagazine.com/top_stories/articles/hearst_castle03.asp

Some of her friends included (4) Lauren Bacall, Clark Gable, Jimmy Stewart, Ernest Hemingway, Gary Cooper, and Cary Grant. She was married to Producers Howard Hawks (Gentlemen Prefer Blondes) and Leland Hayward, (Sound of Music) before later on marrying an English businessman. http://panhistoria.com/Stacks/Novels/Character_Homes/home.php?CharID=6303 http://www.amazon.com/Slim-Memories-Rich-Imperfect-Life/dp/0671631640http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slim_Keithhttp://www.divasthesite.com/Society_Divas/slim_keith_a.htm

  Babe Paley (3)

—A beautiful socialite, Babe Paley married President William S. Paley (4), who was President of CBS.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Babe_Paleyhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_S._Paleyhttp://www.divasthesite.com/Society_Divas/babe_paley_a.htm

http://www.pabook.libraries.psu.edu/LitMap/bios/Paley__William_S.html

A few links from Paley:

In 1964, Paley purchased the New York Yankees and sold it 9 years later to George Steinbrenner (5). Paley also served as a Colonel under then General Dwight D. Eisenhower (5) He promoted Edward R. Murrow (5), making him one of CBS’ top newscasters. Paley was the guy who put 60 Minutes on T.V. when it started out in 1968, with Harry Reasoner (5) and Mike Wallace (5).

Diana Vreeland (3)—

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diana_Vreeland Diana Vreeland was another of Truman’s swans, who was a descendant of George Washington’s brother as well as a cousin of Francis Scott Key. She was a friend of composer Cole Porter and writer Evelyn Waugh.

   C.Z. Guest (3)

was a fun-loving debutante who was so free-spirited that she posed nude for artist Diego Rivera (4), something that might have seemed shocking in those days for a proper society girl from Boston. Fredrick Churchill Guest, a Phipps Steel magnate, fell in love with her, and bought the Rivera for his private collection immediately before the wedding.

 Joanna Carson (3)

—More of a dear friend than a “Swan,” the two were very close. Joanna was with Truman to the end, in fact, he died in her arms. Joanna’s ex-husband, Johnny Carson (4), had numerous connections, especially if you include the guests that appeared on The Tonight Show throughout the 30 years that Carson hosted the show. Celebrity guests (5) included Groucho Marx, Bob Hope, Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis, Jerry Seinfeld and George Carlin.

 Pamela Harriman (3)

This socialite ended up as a diplomat when later in life President Bill Clinton appointed her U.S. Ambassador to France. One of the most fascinating swans, she was also romantically involved throughout her life with a number of important men. Her first husband was Randolph Churchill, Winston Churchill’s son.  When that marriage failed, she had a number of romances including Prince Aly Khan, politician Averell Harriman and playboy Gianni Agnelli of the Fiat fortune.*3  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pamela_Harriman  http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/remember/1997/harriman_25.html  http://www.misfitwomen.org/pamelaharriman.htm

(Daniel Craig, who played Perry Smith in “Infamous,” was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for his role in the movie. Daniel Craig is also the new James Bond.  The character of James Bond was invented by Ian Fleming, who lived at Goldeneye in Jamaica, the place where Paul Allen was dancing barefoot in the sand at Chris Blackwell’s party on New Year’s Eve….which brings us right back to where we started, doesn’t it?:-)

*** (Trivia—Charade was the name of one of Paul Allen’s smaller yachts, one that he used to own before he acquired the Octopus. There was a rumor floating around around in 2002 that he gave the megayacht to his sister, Jody, which would have been a nice hand-me-down for her had it been true:-) Allen has since sold the yacht, and mostly travels aboard his other yachts; the 414ft Octopus, the 199ft. Meduse (currently up for sale, although it is still being used, having accompanied the Octopus on it’s holiday travels to Cozumel recently), and the 302 ft. Tatoosh.

****Winston Churchill (Pamela Harriman’s father in law); William Randolph Hearst (via Slim Keith) (BTW, Hearst (4) employed a number of remarkable writers for his newspaper, including Mark Twain and Jack London, both 5th degree connections to Paul Allen. See… http://www.zpub.com/sf/history/willh.html); Frank Sinatra (party guest), Charlie Chaplin (knew Hearst); Audrey Hepburn (star of Truman’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s); Humphrey Bogart (star of Truman’s “Beat the Devil”); Jackie Kennedy (Invited to the 1966 party but did not attend, Her sister Lee Radziwell did attend and was considered a “swan”); Norman Mailer (party guest); Ernest Hemingway (friend); William F. Buckley (party guest), Andy Warhol (good friend); Gore Vidal (acquaintance of Capote’s); John Steinbeck (party guest and friend of Slim Keith); Theodore Roosevelt, Harry Truman and Lyndon B. Johnson (all 3 had close relatives who were guests at the Ball).

__*2 “You told the truth about Truman, and Philip Seymour Hoffman’s performance is a work of art unto itself,” wrote Lee,” in a fax to the movie’s filmmakers.

(From Lloyd Grove’s feature article, “The Truman Show Draws Big Fan Club”).

More on “The Party of the Century”

*1According to Vanity Fair, “What gave the Black and White brew its intoxicating piquancy was the fact that he had flung together, in a gilt-edged melting pot, the most alluring power brokers in the worlds of high society, politics, the arts, and Hollywood—disconnected universes that collided, if not for the first time that evening, then at least with unprecedented force.  “I have always observed, “Capote told Esquire, “in almost every situation, and I have been in almost every situation, that people tend to cling to their own types.  The very rich people, for instance, tend to like the company of very rich people.  The international social set like international socialites. Writers writers, artists artists. I have thought for years that it would be interesting to bring these disparate people together and see what happens.” What happened that night was reportedly spectacular.  From Deborah Davis’  “Party of the Century”, p. 3 “If the Black and White Ball was famous even before it happened, it became legend in the decades that followed.  Throughout the 1960’s, the ‘70s the ‘80s, and the 90’s, magazines such as Vogue, Esquire and Vanity Fair continue to run stories about this extraordinary night, searching for reasons why the event was a cultural and sociological benchmark.  With every description and photograph, the party’s significance increased. Pundits analyzed it, and fashion layouts celebrated it.

The ball was also a window into a bright and beckoning world. The 1960’s, a decade often defined by images of Jackie Kennedy’s sunglasses, James Bond’s martinis, Andy Warhol’s soup cans and Mary Quant’s miniskirt were a time of high style and high expectations. Life seemed more glamorous then—sex was sexier, success more attainable. Even the moon, as the space program promised, was within reach for the very first time.”

From Vanity Fair, “The Party,” Gerald Clarke notes, “was the product of the literary mind”—in this case, a manipulative instrument whose considerable might was applied to assembling a cast of characters and moving them about like so many chess pieces. In his diminutive hands he controlled, or so it seemed, the destinies of an international group of players who could rouse presidents to action, steer the course of a country’s economy, determine the silhouettes of millions of women, compose the soundtrack of a generation.”

PBS’ Six Degrees Cheat Sheet…

So…we’ve connected Tennessee Williams, Georgia O’Keeffe and George Gershwin to Microsoft Co-founder, Paul Allen. But we still have to link Frank Gehry, Andy Warhol, Truman Capote and Albert Einstein—within 6 degrees.

And I’ll get right on that, I promise:-).

But first I wanted to let you know about a Six Degrees site that I found that will give you hours of fun if you like linking famous people with each other…..

I do, in case you didn’t know:-)…

Plus, it gives me more time to find lots of  links to Truman Capote, who seemed to know absolutely everybody–no kidding—who was anybody in his day. It also gives me a little more of a chance to work on the link to Frank Gehry—a post which would amount to one sentence if you’re just talking about his connection to Paul Allen, but which has somehow mysteriously evolved into something like a 3 part mini-series.

And I’m sure you can wait for that, right?:-) Not that you have anything else to do during this time of year…….

Anyway, here’s the site–in my opinion, it’s pretty cool. The PBS Six Degrees site lists over a hundred historical figures and links them with each other.

See….

http://www.pbs.org/wnet/americanmasters/six_degrees_game/index.html

So Tennessee Williams, Andy Warhol, Albert Einstein, Georgia O’Keeffe, Truman Capote and George Gershwin can be linked, not only to Microsoft Co-founder, Paul Allen, but also to each other—within 6 degrees.

For example, look at the way the PBS site connects Truman Capote to everyone else: (From the PBS site)

“1) Andy Warhol is connected to Truman Capote because Truman Capote and Andy Warhol were good friends.

————————————-

2) Andy Warhol is connected to Philip Johnson because Andy Warhol photographed Philip Johnson. Philip Johnson is connected to Frank Gehry because Philip Johnson and Frank Gehry collaborated on plans for the Peter B. Lewis House in Cleveland, OH.

———————————————————–

3) George Gershwin is connected to Truman Capote because Truman Capote’s book The Muses Are Heard was about a production of George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess.

—————————————————-

4)  Truman Capote is connected to Georgia O’Keeffe because Georgia O’Keeffe appeared in the book Observations by Truman Capote and Richard Avedon.

 5) Truman Capote is connected to Lena Horne because Lena Horne appeared in the book Observations by Truman Capote and Richard Avedon.Lena Horne is connected to World War II because Lena Horne entertained troops during World War II.World War II is connected to Albert Einstein because Albert Einstein immigrated to the United States because of World War II.

—————————————————-

6) Truman Capote is connected to Gore Vidal because Gore Vidal and Truman Capote were literary rivals. Gore Vidal is connected to Tennessee Williams because Tennessee Williams and Gore Vidal were friends.————————————————-

It’s kind of a fun game if you are interested in the lives of anyone on the list—and a number of people who are on it are actually pretty interesting. Here are just a few of the names:

Louis Armstrong, Leonard Bernstein, Placido Domingo, Clint Eastwood, Aretha Franklin, Lucille Ball, Buckminster Fuller, Judy Garland, Samuel Goldwyn, Alfred Hitchcock, Lena Horne, Quincy Jones, Gene Kelly, Norman Mailer, Bob Marley, Yehudi Menuhin, Gore Vidal, Lon Cheney, Charlie Chaplin, Arthur Miller, Joni Mitchell, Edward R. Murrow, Willie Nelson, Gregory Peck, Sidney Poitier, Cole Porter, Frederick Remington, Norman Rockwell, Will Rogers, Maurice Sendak, Rod Serling, Neil Simon, Isaac Stern, Billy Wilder and many more.

Also, as long as you can get one connection (a doorway) to anyone on the list—–you’re pretty much connected to everyone else on the list.

Paul Allen has a number of “doorways”—for example, he is linked to Martin Scorsese because Scorsese is a friend. Scorsese was also the Executive Producer of Vulcan Productions’* PBS series, “The Blues”  and directed one of the episodes in the series, entitled  “Feel Like Going Home.”

And  Clint Eastwood, another person on the PBS list, directed an episode of that series, called “Piano Blues.” See…  http://www.pbs.org/theblues/

*(Paul Allen owns Vulcan Productions.)

Other Paul Allen “doorways” into the PBS American Masters Six Degrees list  include Frank Gehry, whom we’ll talk about later…..

So Allen is in…

 But why stop there?

For example, what about Kevin Bacon?

How is he connected to PBS’ American Masters?

He has at least one doorway into the list through actor/director Clint Eastwood, who directed “Mystic River” 2003, starring among others, ……Kevin Bacon.

See… http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0327056/

And finally,  at least one of Scarlett Johansson’s  “doorways” is a man who began his life 60 years before Scarlett was born, author Truman Capote.  In 1977, Capote made a cameo appearance in Woody Allen’s “Annie Hall.”

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0075686/fullcredits

And within the last few years, Woody Allen directed “Scoop” and “Match Point.”

Both movies starred none other than

Scarlett Johansson

Of The Perfect Score.

So thanks to PBS’ Six Degrees cheat sheet,  Scarlett Johansson, Kevin Bacon and of course, Paul Allen, now have a plethora of new connections…..

and I have more time……:-)

Stay tuned for more connections….within 6 degrees…………

Fascinating Rhythm…the Answers to George Gershwin.

O.k., so here’s the problem….

You have to find the perfect gift for your significant other for
Christmas and you are all out of ideas.

Your beau already has a Zune, you didn’t have 3 days to wait in line
for a Playstation 3, and anyway you’ve only got like $20. to spend on a
gift.

So what do you do? How about giving the gift of music—love songs sung by Obi-Wan Kenobi?

You know what they say:

….you should be all set for Christmas!:-)

 ________________________________________

No, this is not a commercial, and yes, I really do have a point:-). As weird as it sounds, that brings us to our next within-6-degrees connection….

George Gershwin…

Because Obi-Wan is not the only musically talented movie star on the “Unexpected Dreams” album.

Space cadet* Teri Hatcher from “Desperate Housewives,” “Seinfeld’s”
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Jennifer Garner and even Jeremy Irons take turns
singing on the album.
And one of George Gershwin’s best songs, the bluesy “Summertime,” from
“Porgy and Bess” is performed………
by none other than

Scarlett Johansson

Of The Perfect Score.
———————-

So we’ve tied Scarlett to Gershwin, but what about Microsoft Co-founder,Paul Allen—how is he connected
within 6 degrees to songwriter, George Gershwin?

Let’s start with movies….

Although George Gershwin died in 1937 at the age of 38, he was a
prolific songwriter, and his music is still popular today.
His songs are romantic and classy and have
an old fashioned quality that never goes out of style.
It’s that quality that makes his music perfect for movie soundtracks, which is where the connections to Microsoft Co-founder, Paul Allen begin.
Here are more than a few within-6-degrees links to Microsoft Co-founder, Paul Allen:

1) The Aviator——In 2004, “The Aviator” featured the song, “I’ll Build a Stairway to
Paradise” written by George Gershwin.
Martin Scorsese, a close friend of Allen’s, directed “The Aviator.” Paul Allen attended the Aviator premiere and afterparty the evening of Dec. 1, 2004 with his friend, Laura Harring.  (Photo of Allen and Scorsese at the Aviator afterparty.)
See…

http://www.wireimage.com/GalleryListing.asp?navtyp=GLS====89998&c4nvi=3&str=3342&styp=clbi&nbc1=1

2) Catch Me if You Can  —– In 2002, “Catch Me if You Can,” featured the song, “Embraceable You,”
written by Gershwin.
“Catch Me if You Can” was a DreamWorks Production, directed by Steven
Spielberg.
Allen was Spielberg’s business partner — and the largest
shareholder at DreamWorks, SKG at that time.*2
Steven Spielberg founded DreamWorks with Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen, and was the S in the SKG (Spielberg, Katzenberg and Geffen).(Photo shows Spielberg, Allen, Katzenberg and Gina Gershon at a Portland Trailblazer’s playoffs game in 2000). See…

 http://editorial.gettyimages.com/source/search/details_pop.aspx?iid=51548464&cdi=0

“Catch Me if You Can” starred Leonardo Di Caprio, who has attended
premiere parties in the past with Paul Allen. Some of those parties were
even thrown by Allen, such as the “Gangs of New York” party in Cannes,
that Allen co-sponsored along with Georgio Armani in 2002.

Toughest Job in Cannes: Working the Parties

By JULIA CHAPLIN  From the article:“On Tuesday, half the 30,000 people at the 12-day festival, which ends
today, seemed to be maneuvering for an invitation to Mr. Armani’s
affair, given with Paul Allen, the Microsoft co-founder, in honor of
Martin Scorsese, whose “Gangs of New York” got a 20-minute preview on
Monday.”

For a time, Leonardo Di Caprio’s significant other was Victoria’s Secret
Supermodel, Gisele Bundchen. The couple has since parted ways.

A couple of years ago, in February of 2004, Gisele spent Mardi Gras at
Rio de Janeiro’s Carnival, dancing with friends and having a good time.
The micro-skirted girl met Microsoft man Paul Allen, who was there at
the same place and time with his friend Dan Aykroyd.

 3) As Good as it Gets —-
In 1997, the movie “As Good as it Gets” featured the song, “An American in Paris” written by George Gershwin. The movie starred Jack Nicholson, who also starred in “About Schmidt.” Paul Allen attended the Cannes premiere and afterparty for “About Schmidt.” (Photo of Allen, Nicholson, and Allen’s friend Gina Gershon.) See… http://www.wireimage.com/GalleryListing.asp?navtyp=GLS====10432&c4nvi=3&str=3342&styp=clbi&nbc1=1

 4) He Said, She Said  —- In 1991, “He Said, She Said” featured the song, “Blah, Blah, Blah”
written by George Gershwin.
(“He Said, She Said” also starred Kevin Bacon, BTW…)
Jason Hunke, a Senior Director for Marketing and Publicity for Paul
Allen’s Vulcan Productions, used to do publicity work for Paramount
Pictures films, including the movie, “He Said, She Said.”

5) When Harry Met SallyIn 1989, “When Harry Met Sally,” one of the classic romantic movies of
all time, featured a number of George Gershwin songs, including “Our
Love is Here to Stay”, “Let’s Call the Whole thing Off” and “But Not For
Me.”
“When Harry Met Sally” starred Meg Ryan, who also starred in “Sleepless
in Seattle” and “You’ve Got Mail” with Tom Hanks.
Tom Hanks has been in a number of DreamWorks Productions, including “Toy
Story” and “Cast Away,” and has been a guest at Paul Allen’s parties,
including the fabulous yacht trip to St. Petersburg in 2001.
(Meg Ryan was also among the guests at Paul Allen’s Russian trip).

6) Bing Crosby movies: —-“The King of Jazz” “The Birth of the Blues,” and “That’s
Entertainment,” were all movies that starred Bing
Crosby. They were also all movies that featured songs written by George Gershwin.
Crosby’s grandson, Steven Crosby, has worked for many years at Paul Allen’s Vulcan as Vice President of Corporate Communications.

————————————–
And just to make sure we’ve got this one covered, let’s do a couple of
more traditional within-6-degree connections:
1) George and his brother Ira Gershwin (2) wrote many of their songs together.   Ira was a friend of actress Angie Dickinson (3), who reminisced about the marathon poker games that she and Ira used to play in this Library of Congress article:  See..    http://www.loc.gov/loc/lcib/9804/gershwin.html
Angie played the role of “Grace” in the movie, “Pay it Forward,” which
starred
Helen Hunt (4),  who co-starred with  Tom Hanks (5)  in the DreamWorks movie,
“Cast Away” (see above for connections).

Kevin Spacey (4) also starred in the movie, “Pay it Forward.” Spacey, an award-winning actor who founded Triggerstreet.com*1 goes to the same parties as Paul Allen (and Scarlett Johansson—see photos) .
see…

http://www.wireimage.com/GalleryListing.aspnavtyp=GLS====155767&c4nvi=3&str=2445&styp=clbi&nbc1=1
And hangs out with the same people, such as Bill Clinton, who has friendships with both Allen and Spacey.  See… http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevin_spacey#_note-abc
Spacey won an Academy Award for his performance in the movie “American Beauty,” produced by DreamWorks (see above for link).

—————————–

And finally—Just in case you were interested in getting those Ewan McGregor or
William Shatner CD’s, here are a few previews—some great Youtube videos of both of
them singing Elton John songs….:-)

Here’s Ewan McGregor’s “Your Song” from the movie, “Moulin Rouge”  (O.k., so this guy is good…)  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7EY69_NrsH0&mode=related&search =
