Octopus

Just a quick note—

If you haven’t seen it already, you might want to check out Bill Gates’ awesome Keynote Speech at the 2008 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas last Sunday:

See…

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HEWMC4usElM

Gates’ Microsoft Co-founder, Paul Allen was there too, supporting his old friend, sitting in the front row of the Palazzo Ballroom next to Viacom’s Philippe Dauman.

I’ve listed a few links to some first hand accounts of the CES show below. One reporter had a particularly interesting story, as he had the rare opportunity to talk to Allen before the show.

Apparently Allen has lost a lot of weight recently, and when Seattle Times’ Brier Dudley remarked on it, Allen said this:

“I’ve got a trainer.”

I thought Allen was just stating a fact, and that he had actually hired a trainer (Matthew McConaughey, maybe?)—until I saw the Gates video.

But now I think—no kidding—that he was cracking a joke.

(Watch the video and you’ll get it.)

I’ve heard through the grapevine that Allen has a good sense of humor—a “dry wit.” Maybe Dudley caught a glimpse of it Sunday night.

And if that’s true, it’s not a bad joke…..not too bad, anyway…:-)

Allen has a few good reasons to be in a joking mood right now.  Over the holidays he was celebrating in style at St. Bart’s,  jamming on his guitar aboard his 414 ft. yacht, Octopus with rockers Jon Bon Jovi and Robbie Robertson.

See…

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/01/02/bon-jovi-entertains-alis_n_79163.html

And he had company. Celebrity guests at his Octopus party included Steven Spielberg, Denzel Washington, Billy Joel with wife Katie Lee, Harvey Weinstein and bride Georgina Chapman, Penny Marshall, Tom Freston, Linda Evangelista and Peter Morton, financier George Soros, Rebecca DeMornay, LeeLee Sobieski, Vivi Nevo and Ziyi Zhang, Charles Simonyi and Martha Stewart, Lorne Michaels, and Antonio “LA” Reid of Island Def Jam Records.

Afterwards Allen came back to Seattle to watch his football team, the Seahawks, score another big win, leaving them in the running for a Super Bowl bid again this year. Check out this great video of Allen and Seahawks fans after the game:

http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/thebigblog/archives/128891.asp

Not to be outdone, Allen’s Portland Trailblazers scored a victory the very same day, and owner Allen, who had arrived straight from the NFL game to support his NBA team, was again cheered on.

So things have been going pretty well for Allen lately.

Here’s hoping for at least one more joke before the Consumer Electronics Show is over.

Paul Allen wants a space ship for Christmas—a full size, fully operational space ship of his very own. He also wants a machine that can make stuffed animals come alive.

Check out this article:

‘Dear Santa’: Kids ask for their heart’s desire” See.. http://www.democratandchronicle.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071224/LIVING/712240337/1032From the article:
December 24, 2007) — “Whittling down a wish list can be tough for a wide-eyed child at Christmas.
But some kids aren’t that picky.“Dear Santa, You can bring me whatever you want, because I like everything,” writes 5-year-old Sophia Triassi of Greece………..…..Some letter writers showed their artistic side by offering illustrations of their Christmas wish. Take Paul Allen of Geneseo, Livingston County, for instance. “For Christmas I want a reel spas ship — like the one on the back — and a machine that can turn stuff anmls too life,” writes Paul, 8, a second-grader at Geneseo Elementary School. Paul’s mom, Deb Allen, says Paul has acquired an interest in Star Trek during the past year.“I dunno if he thinks he’s gonna get one with warp drive,” says Allen of Geneseo. “He insists it’s gonna be full-size. I said, ‘Now, where are you gonna store this? Santa’s not gonna fit that under the tree.’ He said, ‘He can put it in the front yard, that’s OK.’”

Of course, the person who asked Santa for a full-sized space ship is Paul Allen, a second-grader from Geneseo Elementary School, not Microsoft Co-founder, Paul Allen.  The latter wouldn’t put a space ship on his Christmas list because he already has one.

See….. http://www.space.com/missionlaunches/xprize2_success_041004.html

In fact, Santa Claus may have a hard time this year trying to find the perfect gift for the Microsoft co-founder, because there aren’t many things in the world that this Paul Allen doesn’t already own.

Can you imagine having the Microsoft Co-founder on your Christmas list?

What do you get a guy who already has everything?

To begin with, it’s a good bet that whatever most people could afford is probably a lot less than what Allen spends just filling up his Megayacht, Octopus. A mere tank of gas for his 414 ft yacht will set you back at least $150 thousand dollars.

See…. http://powerandmotoryacht.zeroforum.com/zerothread?id=20&page=6 http://memex.naughtons.org/archives/2007/12/22/4634

And I’m thinking that he probably already has enough ties.

So what are some other options? Sports, maybe?…..Let’s see, he already has a football team and a basketball team—what about a Soccer team?

Nope, he just bought one of those a few months ago.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writers/the_bonus/11/27/paul.allen1203/http://seattle.bizjournals.com/seattle/stories/2007/11/26/story2.html?b=1196053200%5E1554524

And the “Pharoah of the Pacific Northwest” doesn’t need anymore real estate.

He’s got a killer art collection…..

See….

 http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2002652590_allenart29.html ….and a really nice guitar—well, actually, quite a few really nice guitars.. See… http://www.city-data.com/picfilesc/picc26147.php

And though a model airplane might make a good gift, Allen already has a few of those. His collection of World War II planes is just as nice as you can get —especially when you consider that the planes he owns are also full size and fully operational. See…

http://www.flyingheritage.com/

So there isn’t much that you could get Paul Allen that he doesn’t already own.

But I have an idea about what might be the perfect gift for him—something he really, really wants.

If you happen to have a few billion dollars to spare and are an ace at bidding at auctions, Paul Allen could really use a few wireless airwaves. See, there’s this FCC auction coming up next month, and the new 700 MHz band airwaves would match perfectly with the licenses he bought just about 5 years ago……

Just an idea… J

Answers to The Six Degrees of Paul Allen Anniversary Contest

So the prizes didn’t jazz you, eh? C’mon, how many people do you know who have a Darth Vader Jump Drive? Oh well, I had to choose between giving out a Star Wars USB Drive or a new Xbox 360 Elite, and I knew that no one would want one of those, so….:-)

(But seriously, you might want to check out Dynamism’s site.  There are a few really cool items for sale including some sharp-looking futuristic sunglasses that double as a 50-inch plasma screen T.V. when connected to your video Ipod—well, something that feels like a 50-inch screen T.V., anyway—the “I-Theater” sunglasses are actually small enough to fold up and put in your pocket!   Or you could check out the  iTech Bluetooth Laser Virtual Keyboard –why lug around a real keyboard when you can flash a virtual lighted keyboard and type on just about  anything? (see… http://www.dynamism.com/i-theater/main.shtml and http://www.dynamism.com/virtual-keyboard/main.shtml   ). Pretty cutting edge stuff, you know?

But anyway—let’s get back to the contest ….. I know you’re just dying to know the answers, so here they are!

Question:

(1) MITS (Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems) of Albuquerque, N.M. announced “The World’s First Microcomputer Kit to Rival Commercial Models,” the Altair 8800 PC, on the cover of the January 1975 issue of Popular Electronics. Shortly afterwards, a couple of guys called MITS’ owner Ed Roberts and told him that they had a BASIC interpreter for his computer, the Altair.  One of them later went out to meet with Roberts, discovering on the plane that he and his partners had forgotten to write the loader for the program! He hastily finished writing the loader as he flew in to New Mexico and demonstrated the completed program, BASIC, at MITS headquarters to Ed Roberts and his staff. Fortunately the program worked, and Robert hired him as MITS Director of Software Development.  Who was he?

Answer: Microsoft Co-founder, Paul Allen. http://startupgallery.org/gallery/printPage.php?ii=20  http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/features/2000/sept00/09-0525bookff75.mspx  Also— See Stephen Manes and Paul Andrews’ biography, “Gates; How Microsoft’s Mogul Reinvented an Industry—and Made Himself the Richest Man in America” pp.68—76.

The story goes something like this…. Paul Allen and Bill Gates were friends who had worked with computers since high school. They had been following the development of microprocessors, and knew that they had tremendous potential.  One day Allen was walking across Harvard Square when he saw the headline of the January 1975 issue of Popular Electronics—“World’s First Microcomputer Kit to Rival Commercial Models”—with a photo of an Altair computer on the cover.  www.vintage-computer.com/1975.shtml

He knew that this was what he and Bill Gates, then a Harvard student,  were waiting for. The Altair was a computer with limited capabilities and no software—yet at the time it was a breakthrough machine—-other mainframe computers of the day were huge, expensive refrigerator-like contraptions—and here hobbyists had the exciting opportunity to own their own, affordable PC!  For 1975 it was like something out of a science fiction novel.

Allen and Gates had never seen an Altair, but had designed a simulator for another business they had started together called Trafodata.  They knew it was possible, then, to design a software program for the Altair on a large PDP-10 computer.  Harvard just happened to have one of those, and Paul Allen took on the task of designing a simulator for the program they would be writing for the Altair. Bill Gates then started designing the Basic programming language itself. A third friend from Harvard, Monte Davidoff, worked on the math routines for the program.

Tall and bearded, Allen was the oldest-looking person in the group, so he was chosen to meet with MITS Director,  Ed Roberts to demonstrate the program the guys had invented. When Allen arrived at the Albuquerque airport, he expected to meet a professional in a business suit. But MITS director Ed Roberts was instead an earthy-looking guy who arrived in a pickup truck. Roberts’ company, MITS, was located in a dusty strip mall that also housed an office supply shop and a massage parlor. It was not exactly the Ritz. But Allen was not the only one who was surprised. Roberts was equally disconcerted when the software professional who was listed on Trafodata letterhead as  “President” of the company could not even afford the cost of an overnight stay at a local hotel!  Nonetheless, the next day, when the Altair had passed all of its memory tests and was ready for Allen’s program, the software that Allen and Gates wrote for the computer actually worked!

Paul Allen returned home to greet his friend Bill Gates with a brand new Altair computer provided by MITS and a new title, “Vice President and Director of Software at MITS.”

(2) The Rose Garden Arena, located at One Center Court in Portland, Oregon, opened its doors on October 12, 1995. The stadium, which is often used for concerts and other events, is the home of Portland’s professional basketball team, the Portland Trail Blazers. The guy who originally footed most of the $262 bill for the stadium also currently owns the Portland Trail Blazers. What is his name?

Answer: Microsoft Co-founder, Paul Allen.  Allen purchased the Portland Trailblazers from Larry Weinberg in 1988 for $70 million dollars. The team was his first major purchase since Microsoft went public in 1986, and his first purchase of a professional sports team (though it wouldn’t be the last).  The team is still a favorite with Allen, who recently spent millions of dollars on new players this year in order to give the Blazers a winning edge in the upcoming season.

 (3)  Seven tug boat crew members were plucked from icy seas off Port Alfred a couple of days ago in a dramatic sea rescue involving the luxury super yacht, the 414ft. Octopus. The maritime drama started at around 2pm on 8/23/07 when the tug boat, called Douala Tide, mysteriously sank 31 nautical miles off Port Alfred in heavy seas. The Octopus was one of the first ships on the scene and managed to rescue seven crew members of the tug. Who owns the Octopus?  http://www.dispatch.co.za/2007/08/24/Easterncape/abdrama.html

Answer: Microsoft Co-founder, Paul Allen.  Allen owns the megayacht Octopus, which was at one time the largest privately owned yacht in the world. Allen was reportedly not on board at the time of the rescue but the crew members of his ship were the heroes of the day when they saved the lives of seven people during a violent storm near Port Alfred, South Africa. The 414 ft yacht crew responded to a distress call that was sent out to whomever was nearby, and Allen’s ship was large enough to withstand seas so heavy that rescue teams could not come close to the area  for several hours.

 (4) The Seattle Seahawks football team was purchased in 1988 by real estate developer Ken Behring.  Eight years later, when Behring decided that he wanted to move the team to Los Angeles— much to the chagrin of Seahawks fans—another guy stepped in and eventually bought the team, thereby keeping it in Seattle. (For fun, check out this article from The Seattle Post-Intelligencer written in 1996: “SOS: Seahawks Mess Not About You” by Laura Vecsey. (http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/archives/1996/9604030018.asp )  In 2002 the new owner helped build a new stadium in Seattle for the team called Qwest Field. In 2006, this same owner took the Seahawks to SuperBowl XL. Who was he?

Answer: Microsoft Co-founder, Paul Allen.  If you have a chance, read Laura Vecsey’s editorial (above), written at a time when saving the Seahawks and keeping them in Seattle was a Quixotic dream held by a few  diehard fans. In 1996, SOS—the Save Our Seahawks group  who showed up to meet the players on their expectedly brief return to Seattle—were thought of as the “poor betrayed fans, who go down fighting like Don Quixote against the windmill.”    Enter Seattle’s Clark Kent, Paul Allen.   Although Allen’s father played football, Allen bought the team before he became an avid football fan, more than anything else as a favor to his hometown. The postscript for this story is that Allen purchased the Seahawks and then helped to build a stadium, eventually taking the team to the Superbowl. Check out this video of Allen raising the 12th Man flag at the NFC championship game the year the Seahawks went to the Superbowl. As Paul Allen appeared before a packed stadium crowd at that game, the marquee flashed “He Saved Our Seahawks” and the fans cheered so loudly that it shook Qwest Field Arena.  What a moment! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wjhRaYj8sTc

(5)  The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is one of the largest charitable foundations in the world. The Foundation was established in the year 2000 and is dedicated to “bringing innovations in health and learning to the global community.”   Who founded the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation?

 Answer: Bill and Melinda Gates.

See.. http://www.time.com/time/printout/0,8816,1186811,00.html   http://www.gatesfoundation.org/default.htm

What the Gates’ are doing is truly heroic. See this excerpt from Time Magazine:

“Every year malaria kills 1 million people—most of them African children under age 5. When Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, 50, and his wife Melinda, 41, were looking for ways to give away their prodigious wealth, they assumed that such monumental problems were being worked on. Instead, Melinda says, they found a “vacuum that does need to be stepped into.” Step they did: the Gates Foundation now provides more than a third of the world’s entire malaria-research funding, and it’s paying off. The most effective drug to treat the disease, naturally occurring artemisinin, is in devastatingly short supply. But last month Gates-funded scientists announced that they had created the technology to manufacture artemisinic acid synthetically. Within five years, the cost of a lifesaving supply is expected to drop from $2.40 to 25 cents. Lead researcher Jay Keasling says it would not have been possible without a $43 million Gates grant. “I had companies call me and say, ‘This is great, but we can’t give you any money. We can’t make a profit on this,’” he says. But even if millions are saved from malaria, there will be more diseases and more death. The Gateses’ most profound influence has been to change expectations. Their belief that every life should have equal value, backed by their $29 billion endowment in the foundation, has injected hope not only into global health but also into their other priorities: public education, public libraries and at-risk families. The couple demands from grantees the same relentless focus on results expected of Microsoft employees and takes away the classic excuse for failure: not enough money. They have inspired others—from medical students, who are entering global-health fields in unprecedented numbers, to governments, which are putting billions into Gates initiatives. Says Jimmy Carter: “This is the most important foundation in the world.”

(6) This famous photo, taken in 1978, depicts the early Microsoft crew.

See… www.answers.com/topic/microsoft-staff-1978-jpg  One of the co-founders, a young looking guy with blonde hair is seated on the far lower left of the photo. His co-founder is seated on the far lower right sporting a beard and long hair.  Who is the co-founder seated on the right in this picture?

Answer: Microsoft Co-founder, Paul Allen.   Often this photo is depicted with the caption: “Would you have invested?” These 11 early Microsoft employees look more like they belonged in a commune than as a part of one of the most successful companies of all time.  But behind the long hair and beards were the people who laid the foundation for the founders’ vision of  a “computer on every desk and in every home all running Microsoft software.”

(7) Vulcan Productions (www.clearblueskyfilms.com),  an independent film company, has produced a number of movies since it was founded including the Emmy winning documentary, PBS’ “Rx For Survival” and the Peabody Award winning “Black Sky,” a documentary about SpaceShipOne, the spaceship that won the Ansari X-Prize in 2004. Who is the Chairman of Vulcan Productions?

Answer: Microsoft Co-founder, Paul Allen (are you beginning to see a pattern here :-)???

(8)  This computer mogul is also a rock musician who has performed with numerous musicians including Dave Stewart, Dan Aykroyd, Carlos Santana, Little Feat, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Mick Jagger and Peter Gabriel.  In 1999 he cut an album with his rock band, Grown Men.  On the album, special thanks were given to Dave Stewart, Peter Gabriel, Dan Aykroyd and the crews of the Meduse and the Charade,  two megayachts that this guy owned at the time.  He most recently performed with Spinal Tap at former Vice President Al Gore’s Live Earth Concert at Wembley Stadium in London. Who is he?

Kennedy, Elvis Presley, Princess Grace Kelly, photographer Annie Leibovitz, writers Truman Capote, Ian Fleming, John Steinbeck and Mark Twain, President Franklin Pierce, artists Georgia O’Keefe and Pablo Picasso, statesman Nelson Mandela and his Council of Elders, Former President Bill Clinton, scientists Carl Sagan and James Watson, musician Paul McCartney, director Martin Scorsese and actors Tom Hanks, Eric Idle and Scarlett Johansson—of The Perfect Score.  What is his name? (Hint: he wrote PC BASIC).

Answer: Microsoft Co-founder, Paul Allen. (See previous posts of this blog)

(10) In 1999, Seattle P-I’s movie critic William Arnold wrote this article about the revival of a nearly demolished theater in Seattle called the Cinerama. Fill in the name of the person he’s talking about at the end of the quote–( eg. Who saved the Cinerama?):

“It may sound like shameless hype, but there’s no other way to say this: the survival and restoration of Seattle’s Cinerama Theater in the late 1990s is simply one of the greatest success stories in the whole checkered history of movie theater preservation in America. When the theater’s 35-year lease ran out in March 1997, no exhibitor was even vaguely interested in the once-luxurious movie showcase at Fourth Avenue and Lenora Street. The Seattle media wrote its obituary, and no sane observer gave the naive, grass-roots “Save-the- Cinerama” campaign the slightest chance of success. But two years later, the Cinerama is not only still standing, it’s undergone a multimillion-dollar renovation, and will reopen April 23 as the most technologically advanced, state-of-the-art cinema, not just in Seattle and the Northwest, but arguably on the entire planet.  A year ago, in what was supposed to be the Cinerama’s final week, I took a last, sad tour of the long-neglected facility — cringing at the water-damaged walls, crumbling screen, broken seats and dilapidated fixtures that seemed almost beyond repair. Late last month, I wandered through the same space and found it had been not just lovingly restored to its full 1963 glory, but transformed into a kind of nirvana for movie lovers — a theater so chock-full of extras and innovations that it’s hard to list them all……….”   See… http://seattlepi.nwsource.com

Answer: Microsoft Co-founder, Paul Allen.

The story of the Cinerama goes like this: (Excerpt from… “Eight Ways to Save a Cinema” by Lisa Gray, Houston Chronicle)

”In the late ’90s, Paul Allen was renting a video when he saw a petition
to save Seattle’s Cinerama Theatre from being razed to make way for
downtown development. The Microsoft mogul remembered the theater from its 1960s
heyday, and he loved its giant screen. He signed the petition.

And then — you see where this is going — he bought that whole block
of Seattle, including the theater. Through his holding company, he spent
millions of dollars to restore the Cinerama to its groovy glory, complete
with retro mohair seats. At the same time, he updated the
single-screen, 808-seat theater for the digital age, making it one of the highest-tech
movie theaters in the world.
Allen hooked up with AMC Theatres, and the Cinerama now operates as a
first-run movie house, the kind of place where people line up to see
Snakes on a Plane. Seattle Weekly readers regularly vote it the city’s best
theater.

Does Allen think he’ll make his money back? Jason Hunke, Allen’s
spokesman, says the theater operates at a profit and the mogul may develop an
empty parking lot next door. But Allen’s investment was about saving the
theater, not about wringing the maximum return on his money.  The Cinerama, Hunke
says, “is his gift to the city.”

Seattle’s Clark Kent strikes again!!!

________________________________________________________________________

So those are the answers to the Six Degrees of Paul Allen Anniversary Quiz!  When it all comes down to it, this was not such a hard test after all, was it? :-)

Now to start on this next year’s Six Degrees links to Microsoft Co-founder, Paul Allen, including Abraham Lincoln, Albert Einstein, architect Frank Gehry, the Antikythera Mechanism and The Earl of Sandwich…..Stay Tuned!   (In the meantime, “Darth” and I will be going…..:-)

Microsoft Co-founder, Paul Allen is one of those guys who gets more interesting the more you read about him.

The guy is involved in everything you can imagine, in every area you can imagine with everyone whom you can think of.

I was thinking about this sometime last year when I told a friend that I thought that everything in the world could be linked to Paul Allen within 6 degrees. You’ve heard of the Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon game, right? Well, ironically, a few days after I said that to my friend, I read that Paul Allen and Kevin Bacon were performing together on stage aboard one of Paul Allen’s yachts during the 2005 Cannes Film Festival!

Six degrees of Separation is basically the idea that anyone can be connected to anyone else through a chain of acquaintances with no more than 5 intermediaries.   One day I was playing around with my laptop and thought it would be fun to invent a new game based on that theory called “Six Degrees of Paul Allen.” The point of the game is to try to link Microsoft Co-founder, Paul Allen with anyone or even anything—within 6 degrees. And that’s how this blog was born.

On September 4th, this blog will have been around for a year.  And I have to tell you, it’s been a blast! I’ve spent last year trying to find new links between Paul Allen and remote celebrities and even historical figures from a 100+ years ago and that task has been easier than I thought it would be—which leads me to believe that the Six Degrees — “Small World” theory might actually be true, especially when it comes to people like Allen, who really get out there.

Before I do anything else, I want to thank you guys for reading my blog—you have no idea how much you make my day by stopping by!  Serious kudos also go out to Matt Mullenweg (http://photomatt.net/about/)  and the Awesome WordPress Blog Masters, primary enablers of my Blog Stat addiction (almost 14,000 site views and counting!!!:-) — you guys rock!!!  And Google —- it’s such a thrill to see my blog translated into Portugese, etc.— it is so cool! Really, thank you, you guys, for giving me a chance :-)!

Since this is an Anniversary issue, I thought it might be fun to do something out of the ordinary—so here is the “official” Six Degrees of Paul Allen Anniversary Contest.  Unlike the used salad shooter and the video tape rewinder in the shape of a sports car, there is actually a real prize for this contest—a 1 Gigabyte USB Drive (see below). So I’m thinking that someone might actually want to enter the contest, and if not, I’ll send the prize to myself and be the first person on my block with an R2D2 Jump Drive!  Anyway, see if you can be the first to answer the questions below in the comment section, and if you’re the first to answer all 10 questions correctly by 9/4/07 at midnight, I’ll send you the prize. No, really, I will…..:-)***

So here goes…..

1) MITS (Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems) of Albuquerque, N.M. announced “The World’s First Microcomputer Kit to Rival Commercial Models,” the Altair 8800 PC on the cover of the January 1st 1975 issue of Popular Electronics. Who was he?

2) The Rose Garden Arena, located at One Center Court in Portland, Oregon, opened its doors on October 12, 1995. The stadium, which is often used for concerts and other events, is the home of Portland’s professional basketball team, the Portland Trail Blazers. The guy who originally footed most of the $262 bill for the stadium also currently owns the Portland Trail Blazers. What is his name?

 3) Seven tug boat crew members were plucked from icy seas off Port Alfred a couple of days ago in a dramatic sea rescue involving the luxury super yacht, the 414ft.

 4) The Seattle Seahawks football team was purchased in 1988 by real estate developer Ken Behring. ( http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/archives/1996/9604030018.asp ) In 2002 the new owner helped build a new stadium in Seattle for the team called Qwest Field. In 2006, this same owner took the Seahawks to SuperBowl XL. Who was he?

 5) The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is one of the largest charitable foundations in the world. The Foundation was established in the year 2000 and is dedicated to “bringing innovations in health and learning to the global community.”   Who founded the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation?

 6) This famous photo, taken in 1978, depicts the early Microsoft crew.

7) Vulcan Productions (www.clearblueskyfilms.com),  an independent film company, has produced a number of movies since it was founded including the Emmy winning documentary, PBS’ “Rx For Survival” and the Peabody Award winning “Black Sky,” a documentary about SpaceShipOne, the spaceship that won the Ansari X-Prize in 2004. Who is the Chairman of Vulcan Productions?

8.) This computer mogul is also a rock musician who has performed with numerous musicians including Dave Stewart, Dan Aykroyd, Carlos Santana, Little Feat, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Mick Jagger and Peter Gabriel. Who is he?

 9) This tech wizard is connected within six degrees to a number of famous people including Marilyn Monroe, John F. Kennedy, Elvis Presley, Princess Grace Kelly, photographer Annie Leibovitz, writers Truman Capote, Ian Fleming, John Steinbeck and Mark Twain, President Franklin Pierce, artists Georgia O’Keefe and Pablo Picasso, statesman Nelson Mandela and his Council of Elders, Former President Bill Clinton, scientists Carl Sagan and James Watson, musician Paul McCartney, director Martin Scorsese and actors Tom Hanks, Eric Idle and Scarlett Johansson—of The Perfect Score.  What is his name? (Hint: he wrote PC BASIC).

 10) In 1999, Seattle P-I’s movie critic William Arnold wrote this article about the revival of a nearly demolished theater in Seattle called the Cinerama.

Late last month, I wandered through the same space and found it had been not just lovingly restored to its full 1963 glory, but transformed into a kind of nirvana for movie lovers — a theater so chock-full of extras and innovations that it’s hard to list them all……….”   See… http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/movies/cine08.shtml

OK–The first person to answer all 10 questions correctly and write the answers on the comment section below by Sept. 4, 2007 at midnight EST will receive a 1 Gigabyte Star Wars Mimoco USB Drive from Dynamism, the company that sells Paul Allen’s mini-pc, the Flipstart. See… http://www.dynamism.com/usb-star-wars/main.shtml ***

Good luck, guys!!!

———————————————————— *** J
I’m not sure I really have to do this, but just in case someone thinks
his or her answers should have shown up first and he/she should have
won, I don’t want to spend my life savings buying Star Wars themed
USB drives for everybody, you know? :-)
So…..
By entering the contest you agree that your answers are not “consideration” and that I don’t owe you anything; contest is void where prohibited, subject to availability, and good only where Dynamism ships and as long as the shipping fee costs less than the item itself. (Note–Dynamism is not affiliated with the contest nor this blog–the company just has a lot of fun stuff, including cool-looking jumpdrives…:-)
Don’t enter if…..you’re even remotely connected to spam, if you’re coming from a site that’s not ‘G’ rated, if the WordPress Akismet thinks you’re spam, or you send emails to a lot of people who don’t know you on a regular basis. And if you think you should have been first, but your answers don’t show up first below, I’ll give you sympathy but not another USB Drive—basically this is just for fun, guys !!!!

Good Luck!!!

As I passed by the magazine rack at the gym today, a headline on the cover of Wired Magazine caught my eye:

“Heroes of the Wired World.”

I’m a sucker for that kind of news, so I grabbed the magazine and started looking for the story. And guess whose name was included among those “Heroes?” That’s right, Microsoft Co-founder, Paul Allen! The May issue of Wired listed its 2007 Rave Awards for the “innovators, instigators and investors who are changing the world,” and Allen was given the award for his most recent contribution to science, The Allen Brain Institute’s Brain Atlas.

Here is a link to Wired’s terrific article about Paul Allen’s Brain Atlas: See… http://www.wired.com/culture/lifestyle/multimedia/2007/04/ss_raves?slide=5

From the article:         “If the brain is the ultimate computer, the Allen Brain Atlas is the ultimate tech-support manual. Launched with $100 million in seed money from Paul Allen — Microsoft’s other founder turned philanthropist — the atlas provides researchers with the first complete genetic map of the mouse brain. The map identifies more than 21,000 genes, and because mice share 90 percent of their genetic material with humans, the project is a huge step toward understanding how genes regulate the brain’s structure and function. (The next rev of the atlas will map the human neo cortex.) Allen, who survived Hodgkin’s disease in the 1980s, funded the atlas after asking neuro scientists what single project would give them the boost they needed to better tackle disorders like autism, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s and schizophrenia at the genetic level. By determining which genes are active in each cell of the mouse brain, the Seattle-based Allen Institute for Brain Science has given researchers a breakthrough tool to understand how things go wrong, while giving drug developers the data they need to design innovative treatments with minimal side effects.”

It got me to thinking….you know, Paul Allen is having a pretty good summer.

Before the season even started, Allen was named among Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential…. see… http://www.time.com/time/specials/2007/time100/article/0,28804,1595326_1595329_1616322,00.html

In May, Wired Magazine called him a “Hero.”

And a little while later that same month,  Paul Allen joined celebrities like Bono at the Cannes Film festival in France, where Mr. Allen learned, in between movie screenings and lavish parties, that his basketball team, the Portland Trailblazers, unexpectedly won the NBA lottery, entitling the team to the number one draft pick. http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/sports/2003764854_webblazers27.html

So right now, in June, Paul Allen is in Portland, Oregon making some exciting decisions about his basketball team, the Portland Trail Blazers.  Ever since
the Blazers won the first round draft pick in May,
Allen has had a smile on his face. Watch the “pinch me I must be
dreaming” comment he made at this press conference the other day)
http://blog.oregonlive.com/behindblazersbeat/2007/06/video_press_conference.html

Tomorrow, June 28th, he and his staff have the daunting task of deciding which phenomenally
talented player (Kevin Durant or Greg Oden) will be taking the Blazers
to the NBA finals this year. And to do it he’s been getting to talk to them, watch
them practice and watch mountains of basketball videos.
(It’s a tough job, but somebody’s got to do it… :).

Among the good things that have happened recently, Allen’s Trail Blazer franchise has made an incredible turnaround. Allen has a terrific staff this year (how can anyone NOT like Kevin Pritchard?) and everyone seems to be excited about the future of the team. In fact, after the draft pick win was announced, the Trail Blazers sold 3000 season tickets, making it the all-time greatest week in franchise history.*1 (BTW—check out the free Blazer Draft party at 3 pm at the Rose Garden Arena on June 28 th  *2 )

So what happens in July?

I don’t know for sure, but Mark Bowling from down under ( http://markbowlingrunningamok.blogspot.com/ ) writes that Allen’s spectacular 414 ft. yacht Octopus is moored right now in Darwin, Australia beside the beautiful “Athena,” software mogul Jim Clark’s megayacht . (http://www.yachtforums.com/forums/royal-huisman-yacht/3738-review-royal-huismans-athena.html) ( http://powerandmotoryacht.zeroforum.com/zerothread?id=20    http://www.powerandmotoryacht.com/megayachts/1103top100/index1.aspx). PMY reports that Allen’s ship arrived in Darwin on June 16th, and apparently it hasn’t sailed away yet.

And there are a few exciting things going on in Darwin right now. In less than a week, starting July 3rd at Darwin Stokes Hill Wharf, Baz Lurhmann will be filming his epic movie, “Australia” starring Nicole Kidman, Hugh Jackman and Lord of the Rings’  “Faramir” (David Wenham). (see…. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0455824/  and …http://www.australiamovie.net ) * Supermodel Kristy Hinze, granddaughter of Queensland politician Russ Hinze, could be in the area too, as she is rumored to be Netscape Co-founder, Jim Clark’s girlfriend. http://www.topbusinessentrepreneurs.com/10/Billionaires/James-Clark-Netscape-Founder/

But if and when Paul Allen joins the party down
under remains to be seen.   And of course, t
he fact that his ship is in Darwin might mean nothing at all—it could all be a really big coincidence. But I don’t think
so.  Despite the fact that this guy is a visionary and a philanthropist, and despite the fact that he has some serious business to attend to right now—the daunting task of choosing the most talented new player in the NBA for his own personal basketball team—there is always room in Allen’s life for another party.

Yep—I think he’s having a pretty good summer………..

Music History 104

We’ve finally come to the end of our Music History lesson.  In a way it’s kind of sad, because I’ve had a lot of fun with these posts, and there is so much more great music out there, you know? But we’ve got to move on to the link between Microsoft Co-founder, Paul Allen and architect Frank Gehry (which has a lot to do with music, BTW…..but I’m getting ahead of myself….)

:-)

So…..for now we’ll finish  up Music History with a few artists who are truly in a league of their own…..

The Blues…..

Muddy Waters—

http://www.rootv.com/?channel=Metal&clipid=M1117&bitrate=56&format=real   1960 Montreaux festival with Buddy Guy on Guitar  (Hoochie Coochie Man).

Trivia:

The Blues had a baby, and they called it “rock n roll.” (Muddy Waters).

McKinley Morganfield (April 4, 1915 to April 30th 1983), the “father of Chicago Blues,” better known as Muddy Waters, was one of the greatest blues artists of all time.  His music had a profound impact on the music that followed, especially rock n roll.  In 2004, Rolling Stones magazine listed him as #17 of the 100 greatest artists of all time.

Mick Jagger’s Rolling Stones named their band after one of Muddy Waters’ songs, “Rollin’ Stone.”   See… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WaIT0mKJ7D0 (1960 Muddy Waters’ song, Rollin’ Stone), and in 1981 at the Checkerboard Lounge in Chicago, Mick Jagger and the Stones performed onstage with Muddy Waters himself.  Watch this video of Hoochie Coochie Man….

Link to Paul Allen:

There are several links between Muddy Waters and Paul Allen, including a link through  Allen’s friend, Robbie Robertson (1)…………who performed with Waters (2) at The Band’s farewell concert in 1976. The concert was filmed by Allen’s friend,  Martin Scorsese (1)…………who turned the video of the concert into a movie entitled “The Last Waltz.” (See Music History 103).

 The Blues Brothers

“Soul Man”

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ea9mV9EhPvE

Trivia:

The Blues Brothers’ Soul Man was first performed on an episode of Saturday Night Live in 1978. The song would soon be released as a single, reaching the top twenty in March of 1979. (From Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soul_Man_%28song%29 ).  Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi expanded their Blues Brothers comedy routine to include an album entitled “Briefcase Full of Blues” in 1978, (http://www.amazon.com/Briefcase-Full-Blues-Brothers/dp/B000002J5M)   and later made a movie together called “The Blues Brothers” in 1980.

Only two years later, tragedy struck. “Jake Blues’” John Belushi died, devastating his partner and good friend, Dan Aykroyd. With help from friends and the beautiful Donna Dixon, an actress who would later become his wife, Aykroyd recovered, and the Blues Brothers eventually regrouped. Several years later Aykroyd wrote a sequel to the original movie entitled  “The Blues Brothers 2000.”

In 1992, Aykroyd teamed up with Isaac Tigrett, founder of the Hard Rock Café, to open up the first House of Blues in Harvard Square.  Soon the business expanded to include a chain of restaurants located in several major cities in the U.S.  The most recent House of Blues opened up a few weeks ago in Dallas. Dan Aykroyd himself performed at the grand opening—and was also present at the earlier groundbreaking ceremony where he mixed real Mississippi mud into the building’s foundation to symbolize the restaurant’s connection with the heart and soul of Southern Blues music.*1  http://top40charts.com/news.php?nid=32618

http://cbs11tv.com/video/?id=16433@ktvt.dayport.com&cid=7    Groundbreaking for the Dallas House of Blues

 Link to Paul Allen:

“Elwood Blues” Dan Aykroyd and Paul Allen are good friends.  In fact, Allen’s 50th birthday party was held at Aykroyd’s Sunset Strip House of Blues on January 24 th, 2003.** The date was especially poignant, as January 24th was the late Blues Brother John Belushi’s actual birthday (Allen’s is the 21st). But Allen was the man of the hour that evening. The birthday party was low key despite the number of celebrity friends in attendance like Gina Gershon and Martin Scorsese, and the celebration included a video montage of Allen’s friends and associates, who shared memories and expressed their good wishes towards Allen.

There is also a music link between Dan Aykroyd and Paul Allen. To begin with, Aykroyd and Allen have performed together onstage several times.  See… http://blog.seattletimes.nwsource.com/techtracks/archives/2006/03/paul_allen_rocks_with_a_few_hundred_friends_1.html

Additionally, Allen and his band, Grown Men, have performed at the grand opening of several of  Aykroyd’s House of Blues, including the restaurant that opened in
Las Vegas in 1999. See… (http://www.bluesbrotherscentral.com/vegas.php) & (http://www.grownmen.com/interior.asp?section=GMhistory),

In fact, just a few weeks ago at the opening of the Dallas House of Blues, a guy billed as “Northwest Guitar-Slinger, Paul Allen,” performed opening night with “Terry Davidson and the Octopus Show Band.”   The “Guitar-Slinger” was none other than Microsoft Co-founder, Paul Allen!  Terry Davidson, who lead the band that performed with Allen that night, is one of the original “Grown Men,” and, as the name implies, he and the rest of the band have the enviable task of hanging out on Paul Allen’s 414 ft. megayacht “Octopus” to jam with Allen aboard ship (and practice for those public performances). Keep a look out for Allen and his guitar—let me know if you see The “Northwest Guitar-Slinger ” strike somewhere else, o.k.? :-)

Finally, there is the incomparable Jimi Hendrix *4 …

Hendrix’ Voodoo Chile (Short improvisation that actually sounds more like Voodoo Child (Slight Return) performed by guitar master, Buddy Guy)      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lKzMJrQ3uqk&mode=related &search =

Trivia:

Voodoo Chile” by The Jimi Hendrix Experience, is from the album, Electric Ladyland.  The song was recorded on May 2, 1968, and performers included Mitch Mitchell, Steve Winwood of Traffic and Jack Casady of Jefferson Airplane.   From Wikipedia; “The song, basically a 15-minute blues jam, evolved into the final product over the course of an hour. After many of the late night Electric Ladyland recording sessions, Hendrix and the band went to one of the New York City clubs to jam with whoever was there. One such jam at The Scene Club included Steve Winwood and Jack Casady.  Noel Redding was not present as he had stormed out of the Record Plant studio earlier that evening. They spent the night playing “Voodoo Chile”, and when the club closed, Hendrix invited everyone back to the studio. At about 7 a.m . the next morning they began to formally record “Voodoo Chile”. It took only three takes and the final 15 minute version was Hendrix’s longest studio recording. The second take failed since one guitar string snapped.”  (Excerpt taken from Wikipedia  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voodoo_Chile

Link to Paul Allen:

On November 24th, 2002, the night of Jimi Hendrix’ 60th Anniversary party, Buddy Guy, Buddy Miles, Billy Cox, Kenny Olson from Kid Rock and a number of celebrated musicians played Hendrix songs to a packed house in Seattle. During the concert, Paul Allen was invited to come up on stage to perform with the group.  The musicians, including Allen, then embarked on a musical jam session that meandered improvisationally between Hendrix’ Voodoo Chile and Voodoo Child (Slight Return).

Purple Haze  (Jimi Hendrix)

  http://www.amazon.com/gp/recsradio/radio/B00000DHZJ/ref=pd_krex_dp_001_001/104-3570739-3639969?ie=UTF8&track=001&disc=001

Listed as #14 of the 40 songs that changed the world in the most recent issue of Rolling Stone magazine, Purple Haze was recorded in August of 1967 by The Jimi Hendrix Experience. The song appeared on Hendrix’ 1967 album, “Are You Experienced?”          Jimi Hendrix, who performed the song, is widely considered to be one of the greatest guitarists of all time.

From Rolling Stone Magazine*2::      “The electric guitar demanded a Picasso of its own…..More than thirty five years after his death, Hendrix is still the high-water mark of rock guitarists. And if the Beatles’ take on psychedelia was about an enhanced understanding of the world, Hendrix’ version was about exploring his stoned and beautiful internal landscape with playing that was more eloquent than words could be.”*

Trivia:

“Purple Haze is often cited as one of Jimi Hendrix’s greatest songs, and first international hit. For many, it is his signature work. Purple Haze became Hendrix’ second single after his manager Chas Chandler heard him playing the riff backstage and quickly arranged for him to record and release the song……….The Rolling Stone magazine placed the song at No. 17 in their “500 Greatest Songs of All Time”…..

There are several theories about the origin of the name of the song, “Purple Haze.” One theory, according to Wikipedia, is that the song refers to Hendrix’ experiences with LSD.  But Hendrix himself denied that the song was about drugs. Instead he said that it was drawn from a dream he had where he was walking under the ocean, surrounded by a purple haze.  At another point, Hendrix said he took the phrase “purple haze” from a science fiction novel written by Philip Jos Farmer called “Night of Light.” (The phrase that appears in Farmer’s book is “purplish haze.”) Hendrix also told fans that the song was about love, and said that the line “whatever it is, that girl put a spell on me” was the key to the meaning of the lyrics. (Excerpts and information taken from Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Purple_haze

Link to Paul Allen:

It was rumored that Allen played a “spectacular cover of Jimi Hendrix’s ” Purple Haze,’” during the party he threw at his Beverly Hills home in March of this year on behalf of the Southern California Committee for the Olympic Games, a group that wants to bring the 2016 Olympics to L.A.*4  That was one of his most recent links to the song, but it was not the first. When Allen was about thirteen, his parents went away for a vacation and he and his sister stayed with a girl whose mother lived up the street. When she put on the Hendrix album, Allen, who was used to his parents classical and jazz records, was immediately touched. “It was like listening to music from another planet,” he told Jeff Goodell of Rolling Stones Magazine in a 2000 interview.

Allen’s love of Hendrix’ music has lasted a lifetime.  In fact, it sparked a fast friendship in the 1990′s with another avid Hendrix fan, tennis star Monica Seles.   Allen and Seles became very close friends in the mid-90′s in part because of their shared passion for Hendrix. Allen went to Seles’ tennis matches and Seles sat next to him at Blazer games.   There were even rumors of a serious romance between the two for a time—Seles was Allen’s date at the masked ball in Venice in 1997, dressed as Marie Antoinette..

Jimi Hendrix was much more than a musician to Monica Seles.  The young tennis phenomenon had been viciously attacked—stabbed on the court by a fan of her opponent, Stefi Graff, and the assault left Seles physically and emotionally scarred.   (The inspiring story of her comeback can be found in her 1996 autobiography, “From Fear to Victory.”)  Seles told fans that it was Jimi Hendrix’ music that had consoled and inspired her through her recovery. In fact, she was so moved by his music that while she was Nike’s spokesperson she named a line of tennis shoes “Air Haze” after Hendrix’ song, Purple Haze. The shoes had a guitar outline in the outsole and grooves in the midsole representing guitar picks.*3

Paul Allen was moved by Hendrix’ music as well, to the point that it inspired him to build a place that Hendrix dreamed about— a gathering place where people of all ages, interests and backgrounds could come together to experience music. What is that place?  It is the answer to the one degree link between Frank Gehry and Paul Allen—the place where architecture is frozen music, the place that links nearly everyone whom we’ve talked about on this blog since May 1st to Paul Allen, mostly within one degree…..

Stay tuned……

Music History 103

Let’s continue on with our music history lesson— with some great songs from the 70′s and beyond and their links to Microsoft Co-founder, Paul Allen…..

1970′s

The Band and Eric Clapton—Further On Up the Road (from The Last Waltz)

* http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pzcyK4IXN9A

Trivia:

Musician Robbie Robertson performs this terrific song in concert with Eric Clapton and the rest of The Band on the video soundtrack of “The Last Waltz.” “The Band” members included Robertson, Richard Manuel, Garth Hudson, Rick Danko and Levon Helm.  The Band had a farewell concert after 16 years of touring on Thanksgiving Day, November 25th , 1976 at Winterland Ballroom in San Franciso.   The rock group was joined by more than a dozen special guests, including Eric Clapton, Neil Diamond, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Ringo Starr, Muddy Waters and Neil Young. The concert was filmed by Martin Scorsese and made into a documentary in 1978, which was released on DVD in 2002. The film has been hailed as one of the greatest concert films ever made.   (Wikipedia The Last Waltz  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Last_Waltz )

From Wikipedia: “As Clapton was taking his first solo on “Further On Up the Road”, his guitar strap came loose. Clapton said “Hold on,” but Robertson picked up the solo without missing a beat….” (You can see it on this video—watch what happens around 54 seconds into the song:-).

Link to Paul Allen:

Robbie Robertson has been a good friend of Paul Allen’s for years. Robertson often performs with Allen for fun at various parties and in various places, including aboard Paul Allen’s yacht, Octopus. See…  http://www.wireimage.com/searchresults.aspx?cbi=3342&s=robbie%20robertson&vwmd=e&sfld=C

Sweet Home Alabama (Lynyrd Skynyrd)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=huLklsj_5HI

Trivia:

“Sweet Home Alabama ” is a song by Southern rock band Lynryd Skynyrd that first appeared in  1974 on their second album, “Second Helping.”  “Sweet Home Alabama” was written as an answer to the songs “Southern Man” and “Alabama” by Neil Young, which were critical of the South.  “We thought Neil was shooting all the ducks in order to kill one or two,” said Ronnie Van Zant at the time (Dupree 1974). Van Zant’s musical response, however, was equally controversial, with references to Alabama Governor George Wallace and the Watergate scandal. Despite (or perhaps because of) the debate, the song has become one of the most popular examples of Southern rock.  It reached the top ten of the US charts in 1974 and was the band’s second hit single.” (Excerpt taken from Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sweet_Home_Alabama_%28song%29 )

Link to Paul Allen:

Allen invited Lynyrd Skynyrd to his 1998 luxurious Alaska party aboard the Crystal Harmony along with 400 other celebrity guests, and even spent a few evenings jamming with them (and a few other musicians) onstage.

 1980′s

Who is that girl? Eurythmics

  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N57CRBHiMoc&mode=related&search =

Trivia:

“Who’s That Girl?” was a song recorded by the extremely popular 80’s group, the Eurythmics, comprised of Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart.  According to Wikipedia, Stewart’s former wife, Siobhan Fahey, and two other members of her music group, Bananarama, make cameo appearances in the original MTV video for this song. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Who%27s_That_Girl%3F_%28Eurythmics_song%29)

Link to Paul Allen:

Eurythmic’s Dave Stewart is one of Paul Allen’s best friends, who also often performs with him onstage or in Allen’s recording studios. He and Allen co-founded the
Covent Garden creative arts hotspot, the Hospital.

1990′s

Peter Gabriel—

Steam (in concert)

  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YB7NhBdgtps&mode=related&search =

 Trivia:

Musician Peter Gabriel was born Feb. 13, 1950 in Chobham, Surrey, England.   He first became famous as the lead vocalist and flautist of the rock group Genesis. After leaving Genesis, Gabriel went onto a successful solo career.  More recently he has focused on producing and promoting world music and pioneering digital distribution methods for music.  He has also been involved a number of humanitarian efforts, including the founding of the human rights organization, Witness.   See… http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Witness_%28human_rights_group%29 (Excerpt from Wikipedia  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Gabriel

Link to Paul Allen:

In addition to a long-term friendship that has included collaboration on multimedia projects in the 90′s, Peter Gabriel was also a guest at Paul Allen’s lavish 1998 Alaskan party aboard the Crystal Harmony. Later on, Gabriel could not resist Allen’s invitation to come aboard one of his yachts (Meduse) for a jam session in Allen’s onboard recording studio during a trip down the Amazon.

Mid-90′s

 Kiss From A Rose (Seal)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ateQQc-AgEM&mode=related&search=

Trivia:

“Kiss from a Rose” is a song from Seal’s second eponymous album, “Seal.” The song was featured on the 1995 “Batman Forever” soundtrack.  It was originally planned to accompany a love scene between Bruce Wayne and the character Chase Meridian but ended up placed at the end of the film…………… “Kiss from a Rose” is considered one of the most popular waltzes from the 1990s. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kiss_From_A_Rose From Wikipedia)

 Link to Paul Allen:

Paul Allen and his band were billed to open for Seal at the new WAMU Theater in Qwest Field Events Center in
Seattle last November. Qwest is the home of the Seattle Seahawks, owned by Allen.   See..  http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/artsentertainment/2003339621_wamu03.html.

Unfortunately, Allen had come down with a bad case of bronchitis that night, leaving his band to perform the opening act without him. So what do you call your band when you’re listed as Paul Allen’s band and Paul Allen doesn’t show up? The Predicaments, of course, which is how Allen’s band introduced themselves that night!  These guys seem to have a great sense of humor, and a great sense of fun when it comes to jamming together, whether they do it at Allen’s home studio, his reportedly gorgeous Octopus (yacht) studio, or in front of an audience.

It’s that sense of fun that you can sometimes hear in Paul Allen’s original songs. One example is the freewheeling improvisation in “Said and Done,” a song written by Allen and recorded on his 1999 Grown Men album.  See… www.grownmen.com . Although the lyrics are not exactly cheerful, the melody rocks with free-spirited fun—-you get the impression that these guys are having a really, really good time, and that makes the song fun to hear.

I got a kick out of something I saw on Youtube the other day and wanted to share it with you.

Basically it’s a video of the iPhone as described by Saturday Night Live’s version of “Steve Jobs.”

I’ve been trying to link the video, relevance-wise with the topic of this blog, and so far haven’t succeeded.     I have made a few attempts, though…..and this is all I’ve come up with…

Saturday Night Live Alum Dan Aykroyd spent Superbowl last weekend with Microsoft Co-founder, Paul Allen*, but the question on everybody’s mind this week is:

Where will Aykroyd be on Darwin Day?*1

If he’s with Paul Allen, he’ll be spending time near Darwin’s old stomping grounds—way, way down south, cruising from Ushuaia, Argentina to Antarctica,  and sailing through the Antarctic Peninsula for a week or so aboard Allen’s megayacht, Octopus…*2

…and speaking of Saturday Night Live stars, here’s a video…….yada…yada….yada….

That really was as bad as it sounded, wasn’t it?:-)

Someday I will do a series on “Connecting the Dotcoms” which will include linking Microsoft’s Allen with Apple’s Steve Jobs within 6 degrees.   Someday…

But for now…..since I can’t think of anything good to say, I might as well just stop talking and let you enjoy the video…:-)

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K4VieMjZYfI

(BTW—No insult intended Mr. Jobs. :-) The iPhone sounds cool with or without the 2 billion songs…)

Party of the Century (Part Two) Answers to Truman Capote

Paul Allen’s Parties…

One thing you can say about Microsoft Co-founder, Paul Allen—-he throws great parties. In fact, he has hosted a few of them over the years that could vie for the title of  “Party of the Century.”

His parties always have a great theme, luxurious surroundings, and an interesting, eclectic group of guests.  Scientists like James Watson, artists like Dale Chihuly, comedians like Robin Williams and Eric Idle, rock musicians Bono and Mick Jagger, actors such as Tom Hanks and Candice Bergen, socialites like Paris Hilton, political dignitaries such as presidents and princes, movie producers like David Geffen and Steven Spielberg, writers and tech luminaries—even spiritual guru Deepak Chopra all rub shoulders with each other at his lavish soirees. But there is often more going on in these kinds of high profile get-togethers than celebrating and having a good time. *  It is also often about making the right connections.

From “The Toughest Job at Cannes: Working the Parties”:

“People think the deals get done at all the
hotel suites and at the market,” said Michael Peyser, who first came to
Cannes in 1979, when he was a production manager on the Woody Allen film
“Manhattan.” “But the real deals happen at the hot parties. It’s much
easier to make friends with someone while they’re dancing by the
swimming pool than in a business meeting.”

Ironically, an important role Allen has played in recent years is that of behind the scenes host, bringing people together to make things happen, not just in business but creatively** and even philanthropically.  When the private billionaire, thought of  as shy and even  reclusive, began to emerge as the consummate host in the mid-90s, some people were surprised.  But the role was actually quite  familiar to Allen. In the early days of Microsoft, he often played host to the close-knit Microsoft crew. Allen was the guy with the big screen T.V. in those days, and so his house was the place to go on Saturday nights to watch Saturday Night Live and have a good time. (Later on, the guests themselves were SNL cast members.)****

As Microsoft stock went up and Allen’s wallet grew, so did the magnitude of his parties.  In fact, some of his gatherings over the years have been pretty remarkable. Here is a list of a few of the more notable parties that Paul Allen has hosted through the years:

1996 Cap-Ferrat

1)–His first Hollywood party during the 1996 Cannes Film Festival at his Villa in South France–where David Geffen, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Daryl Hannah, Carlos Santana and David Lynch all rubbed shoulders with tech luminaries like Xerox PARC’s David Liddle, then head of Allen’s Interval Research. Elaborate invitations embossed in faux gold went out to all of the guests, and the pirate-themed ambiance included a large model ship that floated decoratively in the swimming pool. Allen reportedly flew in more than 200 people from London, Seattle, New York and Los Angeles for the lavish affair.*1

  1997 Venice

2)—His party in Venice the following year, where each of the 300 celebrity guests he invited were flown in on chartered jets and whisked away to luxury hotels. Entertained the first night with a baroque music concert, the second night, guests were met at their hotels by gondolas laden with champagne and crystal glasses and taken to a fifteenth century palace on the Grand Canal to celebrate the luxurious Renaissance-themed soiree. David Geffen called it the “best party I’ve ever been to, bar none.”*1

1998 Alaska

3)–Allen’s 1998 four-day party cruise on the Crystal Harmony that went from Juneau, Alaska to Prince Rupert, Canada, down the Inside Passage. This trip included even more guests—450 this time. Paul invited friends and big money business people; Bill and Melinda Gates, venture capitalist Ann Winblad, and wireless billionaire Craig McCaw, to name a few.*1  An interesting mix of guests, the list included Donald Johanson, the paleoanthropologist who discovered “Lucy,” the oldest and most complete human ancestor, actors Jeff Goldblum, Dennis Hopper, Kevin Bacon and Penny Marshall, and DreamWorks Producer Jeffrey Katzenberg.

Activities included bear-trekking tours, seaplane rides, salmon fishing, lectures by Jacques Cousteau’s son, Jean-Michele, and a traditional Alaskan potlatch ceremony. In the evening there were jam sessions with musicians Peter Gabriel, Lou Rawls, Mick Jagger, Lynyrd Skynryd, Dave Stewart, Debbie Reynolds, Little Feat and of course, Paul Allen.*2

2001 St. Petersburg, Russia

4)—The 2001 trip to Helsinki, Finland that ended up as a luxurious cruise to St. Petersburg, Russia. The invitations were delivered to guests in a gold-embossed wooden box covering a delicate faux Faberge egg. Once having accepted the invitation, guests were flown to Helsinki, Finland soon to be escorted to their own deluxe suite in a luxury liner. They were then treated to various trips and luxuries throughout the tour, including a day-long sauna retreat on a nearby island, museum visits, a helicopter tour of the city and the opportunity to shoot AK 47s. And as expected, the trip culminated in a fabulous party. “Save your energy for tonight,” the itinerary read, “the evenings festivities will be unforgettable.”http://www.seattleweekly.com/news/0132/nc-needle.php

And finally, during recent years, Allen’s parties have been hosted aboard his 414 ft. megayacht called the Octopus. The parties he’s thrown aboard this yacht, and (sometimes even his other smaller vessels such as the 199ft. Meduse and 302 ft. Tatoosh) have been THE place to be during recent Cannes Film Festivals. See…http://sarahsharp.stellasoftware.com/diary/?p=89http://www.webshots.com/search?query=Octopus+in+Cannes+May+2005http://powerandmotoryacht.com/megayachts/1105top100/index2.aspx

And in many ways, the ship is the perfect venue for a party.  Described as a “floating palace,” the lovely Octopus has seven decks, a swimming pool, basketball court, an infirmary, a concert space for 260 and comes equipped with a recording studio, a movie theater, and a beautiful glass bottomed room on the underside of the ship all lit up for viewing marine life and whatever else dwells in the undersea world below.

As you can imagine, it is easier to keep secrets in and unwanted guests out when the parties are hosted aboard a contained yacht. But a few leaks have revealed some really great parties, including one New Year’s Eve Party at St. Bart’s that included George Lucas, Eve, Owen Wilson, Simon LeBon, Ron Perelman and Ellen Barkin, Stephanie Seymour and Peter Brant, Harvey Weinstein and Georgina Chapman, Barry Diller and Diane Von Furstenberg, and Russell and Kimora Lee Simmons.

Allen performed onstage all night that evening with various musicians while people sang and danced. The jam sessions continued well into the morning, when, at around 3 a.m. Usher jumped up on stage and joined Paul Allen and his band, singing a few Ray Charles and Johnny Cash songs.

Allen has also entertained other kinds of celebrities aboard his yacht, including the art community in Venice in 2005, a gathering that included Pablo Picasso’s granddaughter, Diana Widmaier Picasso.

But the Octopus has been more than just a party venue. Last summer, it was the home base for a trip to Africa, where Paul Allen’s friend, Dan Aykroyd considered opening up one of his House of Blues restaurants in Durban, South Africa.  The eventual gathering of friends,*** included a number of celebrities, including Aykroyd, Bill Gates, President Bill Clinton and Virgin Galactic’s Richard Branson.

During the same summer trip, Bill Gates and Paul Allen visited Kenya, where they donated funds to help the 3,500 locals there to construct a dam for their livestock.  http://www.eastandard.net/hm_news/news.php?articleid=1143955796

Whatever else can be said about Paul Allen’s parties, it is clear that the reputedly shy billionaire*4 has also become the consummate host.

“No one entertains like that anymore. He is like a Medici, a grand seignior, someone who entertains in the old style,” said movie producer Howard Rosenman.*2.5

The last “Party of the Century” was hosted by a writer.  Who knows?—maybe the next one will be hosted by a tech wizard. Stranger things have happened….

*4 Although he has a reputation for being shy and even reclusive, some of Paul Allen’s closest friends disagree with that characterization:

“Paul is, by nature – I don’t want to use the word shy – but he’s not extroverted,” Rayburn says. “He doesn’t like to stand up in front of people like Bill Gates does.”

Neither is he a recluse in the fashion of Howard Hughes. “He’s actually very outgoing in the right environment and once you get to know him,” Rayburn says. “But the working press likes to create this image of a mystery man. It’s not a cultivated image. It’s not intentional. It’s just his nature. He’s never felt compelled to behave to someone else’s standards or to explain what he’s doing except to a pretty select group of people.”  (From “Paul Allen: More than Money” by James Wallace, Seattle P-I, 4/22/96)

1000 site views and counting!!!! :-)

I just checked my blog stats and discovered that as of today there have been 1,000 visits to this blog site (plus)! That is very cool!

I understand what people mean now when they talk about “blog stats” addiction. This is better than chocolate, you know?

Thanks, guys! You made my day!!

O.k., now on to business:-)………………

We have a zillion connections to make, but let’s start with one of the most unlikely, playwright Tennessee Williams.

So what is Microsoft Co-founder, Paul Allen’s connection to Tennessee Williams?

This sounds hard, but if you think about it, it’s kind of an easy one.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tennessee_Williams

Playwright Thomas Lanier (Tennessee) Williams III, wrote a number of classics,  including “A Streetcar Named Desire” and “The Glass Menagerie.”

In addition he wrote another classic, “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” which won the Pulitzer Prize for drama in 1955.

In 1958 it was made into a movie, which starred actress Elizabeth Taylor (1)

See…

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0051459/

Taylor was once married to hotel magnate Conrad Hilton’s son, Conrad Jr. (Nicky) Hilton (2),

whose grandnieces are socialites Nicky Hilton (named after him) and Paris Hilton (3).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conrad_Hilton,_Jr.

Paris has been a guest at parties aboard Paul’s yacht Octopus, including the 2005 Cannes Film Festival party.

Another connection to Paul Allen, with a detour through Kevin Bacon…..

Tennessee Williams wrote “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof”

Starring Elizabeth Taylor

Who starred with Elizabeth Perkins in the 1994 movie, “The Flinstones”

Perkins starred in “He Said, She Said” with none other than Kevin Bacon.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0102011/

Jason Hunke , a Senior Director of Marketing and Publicity for Paul Allen’s Vulcan Productions, used to do publicity work for various Paramount Pictures films, including, “He Said, She Said.”

http://www.vulcanproductions.com/TemplateAboutUs.aspx?contentId=58

And here is yet another connection that includes Scarlett Johansson…..

Williams also wrote “A Streetcar Named Desire”

Starring Marlon Brando

Who was “Vito Corleone” in “The Godfather”, directed by Francis Ford Coppola

Who has reportedly been a guest at Paul Allen’s parties.

Coppola’s daughter, Sofia Coppola

Won an Academy Award for writing “Lost in Translation”

Which starred

Scarlett Johansson

Of the Perfect Score….

 More connections to follow…stay tuned:-)
